Sweet Alcoholic Drinks Targeted by Bill
Sweet Alcoholic Drinks Targeted by Bill
Written for the web by Elizabeth Bishop, Internet News Producer
Kxtv California

A pair of state senators is targeting a popular new drink critics call "alcopops," saying the fruity-flavored malt beverages have become very popular among underage drinkers. A bill to be introduced by senators Carol Migden and Liz Figueroa aims to protect teens from being targeted by alcopops marketing and sales practices.

The sweetened drinks taste like fruity soda and have the same alcohol content as beer. The federal government allows them to be classified as beer, which means they are widely available. The California Council on Alcohol Problems is just one of the parties filing a lawsuit to force the state's Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to reclassify alcopops as hard liquor, which would mean the drinks couldn't be sold in convenience stores.

The drinks are popular among teens. One recent study by the center for science in the public interest showed nearly half of 14- to 18-year-old girls have tried them.

3. Jesus Christ. KIDS ARE GOING TO GET DRUNK IF THEY WANT TO
I drank (and still do drink) underage. I'll drink whatever alcohol I can get my hands on (although coconut rum with pinapple and orange juice is FUCKING AMAZING).

4. Now that's some fine journalism!
One recent study by the center for science in the public interest showed nearly half of 14- to 18-year-old girls have tried them.

I guess it isn't necessary to capitalize proper nouns anymore.

8. Sweet Alcoholic Drinks Targeted by Laura
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 03:03 PM by soothsayer
My GF Laura (a sweet alcoholic herself) is addicted to Tilt and "B to the E" (horrid beer/caffeine/ ginseng/taurine combos that taste like robotussin).

But she's 44, not 14.

(edited to make funnier headline)

9. You'd think...
that the day after consuming mass quantities of those sweet drinks and the banging headache and upset stomach accompanying it would be enough to get kids to stop, or at least become more sophisticated drinkers. Stick with vodka kids, you can't go wrong! :P
