Am I Un-American?
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 01:27 PM by BrentWill4U

I have been working hard since High School, went though College, and now am 26 and have alot of savings. I have been able to put away 120K dollars. The VAST majority of my money is with international funds. Does the fact that I invest so much of my money outside of America, make me Un-American? Should I change this and invest more here? We do complain about companies that send money and jobs away from the states to oversees countries

8. Okay, I removed it..
Trying to avoid a flame war, as I got last time. However, it is a legit question. Is it un-American to put so much money outside the country. We get on companies that send so money and jobs away from the states.

10. No. Just smart. As long as you work to make the US more attractive...
As long as you work politically to make the US more attractive to investors, I don't see any reason to regret investing elsewhere, given current circumstance. Investments have to be made with an eye toward reality.

12. Then why complain when American Companies move jobs elsewhere?
Aren't they just keeping an "eye toward reality"?

14. People generally want their lives to improve
or at least not to deteriorate so of course they don't want jobs to move overseas. It's usually the govt's role to help keep jobs in the country and if they can't do that then of course people are going to be disappointed.

16. Perhaps by not offering tax incentives to businesses to
move their jobs offshore? And then imposing tax DISincentives to these greedy profiteers.

17. NeoCons call it "protectionism" as opposed to their "globalism"
Others call it "fair trade practices"... but it has been our policy since colonial times and it is still the policy of just about every other nation on earth.

It works like this:

Our policies should reflect that we value the standard of living of our citizens so...

We will make it equally expensive to buy a foreign product as it is to buy a domestic one. Usually through tarrifs.
this protects our business from unfair competition with foreign firms that do not have to provide for the cost of healthcare, fair wage, etc.
...as a result, the labor that creates these products at home become consumers with enough wealth to turn around and buy Mr. Ford's Model A and keep the system afloat.

The NEW paradigm, seen only in the last 20 years or so, goes more like this:

Screw the labor, we will tear down "trade barriers" and allow foreign goods to be cheaper than domestic ones and imported to your local Wal Mart.
To make it up to domestic businesses, we will allow them easier access to the cheap foreign labor used by the foreign companies.

therefore, the only ones who get screwed are the US labor force...

13. Not at all, when the markets opened after 9/11 I sold all North American

stocks I had and haven't reinvested in them since. (except for three oil company stocks that I bought in December of 2000)
