A corollary to this distressing mental syndrome --
and it is a syndrome, on par with male chimpanzees eating their young -- is the majority of Americans (especially opinion columnists) declaring that
"the fight for Mideast democracy" has been undermined by terrorists because, in supporting groups like Hezbollah, "the Lebanese people have proven that they don't deserve democracy."
(Marion Barry is often cited as another example of people not deserving democracy. Oddly, the US and Israel as a whole are rarely cited as counterexamples, perhaps because there is not a country that has the power to project force into our "broken" democracies.)
