Global warming idiocy
Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 07:25 PM by salinen
For a moment, let's accept the corporate wishes that global warming has nothing to do with human activity. Now, it could be increases in volcanism, escaping CO2 from somewhere, or cow farts. What difference does it make whether the cause is human induced, or some other cause? Global warming is here. Should we forget about it because our lifestyles are innocent.

Can humans cause any environmental disaster? Have humans caused any environmental disasters? Just ask your local moran.

1. Doesn't matter what caused it, I don't think
And I don't think we can stop it. It's here. We have to figure out how to live with it.

2. Bikinis certainly might be useful in a climate gone mad... or
perhaps that new material that "pumps" heat away from your body so to speak.

3. I think we can stop it to a great extent
if we take multinational action within the next 5 years. That's what Gore and the NRDC are saying. We have to make this our number one issues and pressure politicians to act. It won't be easy but it is possible.

4. I haven't seen Gore's movie
because I figured I was the choir he was preaching to. But I honestly did not know they had the opinion we could halt it. Guess I better watch the movie. Maybe I'm hanging crepe and I don't need to be.

6. That part is from some of his interviews
but I've also talked to people working on the issue. Don't give up hope, yet.

8. There's a good program on Discovery tonight.
It just ended, but watch for the repeat. That flaming liberal, Tom Brokaw made Al Gore look like a conservative industrialist.

Where Gore presented, a probably best to middle case scenario, this show presented a more graphic, and a much worse case scenario. And he used a lot of the same experts that Gore used.

15. Okay I feel really dumb
I am going to promise to see that program and the Gore movie. I was being defeatist. It's so much easier, you know?

I can order a copy of the Brokaw program at school. (I'm a teacher) Might have to wait for the Gore DVD. I haven't seen it showing here.

7. As Gore correctly points out
we stopped the destruction of the ozone layer with a major international cooperative effort to ban CFCs.

There's no reason we can't address this issue as well--if we refuse to let the petroleum industry run the show.

11. It does matter what caused it and we could have stopped it!
We should never have had to learn how to live with it.

14. Well, I have now been reeducated
by my friends here and it does indeed, matter what caused it because evidently we CAN change it.

My bad.

16. The scientific community as a whole disagrees with you completely
We can reverse it. We know the cause and we can, with a united effort, make a world change that will reverse the process. However if we do not make the effort we will not have a (known) home in the universe that is fit for mankind. See the movie "Inconvenient Truth" and make a personal effort. Change your light bulbs etc. We all must do our part even if Republicans don't. Soon they will be gone and we will still have the problem so the sooner we all get started working on it in our own personel life the better off mankind will be. Although if you feel like some that maybe it is best if mankind is wiped off the face of the planet then do nothing and let the chips fall where they will.

maybe we don't deserve to be here..at least in this number.

If you complete reading the thread you'll see I have recanted.

5. Gee, let's see. We are in a garage. Rather than a closed door, there is
NO door at all. The car is running. Let's see if we can keep it running until Jesus returns. We have unlimited fuel in this scenario.

What have we forgotten to consider? Maybe our need for air to breathe until Jesus returns?

9. The problem with that is that if humans aren't the cause...
it gives them some cover when claiming that changing human behavior won't alleviate the problem. Misinformation and hiding information prolongs the government inaction.

So does a defeatist attitude (not in your post), that nothing can be done about it.

We had all better get really smart really quick.

17. Humans didn't create the sun or sunburns but we did create sunblock
and air conditioning. It doesn't matter how it came to be, whether humans are the cause or not. what matters is if we can do something to stop it..Mankind is pretty ingenious so I believe we can, if the world works together remedy the situation. It also will provide jobs....

18. I guess there is irony there since the refrigerant of the
air conditioners helped deplete the ozone layer.

Any resonable attempt at a solution will require an agreement on the cause, or at least the acknowledgment that there *is* a problem. As long as we allow attention to be diverted from human causes there won't be the a meaningful attempt of a human solution-- and some of the compliance with a solution will probably have to be voluntary.

10. Of course humans are the cause,
but I wouldn't count the cow farts out either. But humans can affect this by becoming vegetarians. We need to be the solution. Living simply needs to become a way of life for more Americans.

12. Humans are the cause
and there's nothing we can do about it!

I hope Andrew Clearfield takes full advantage of being a student at Carnegie Mellon University. He has a lot to learn.

The globe has been getting progressively warmer since the Pleistocene ice age epoch peaked 165 million years ago. Why is anyone surprised?

Man's contribution to this may be because the world's population has doubled over the past 45 years and all the additional exhaling of CO2 as we work for a living is a factor.

13. this is out of the old
chemical PR playbook. When there are commercial chemicals sold that are found in nature (Example, formaldehyde), industries yell that they do not need to restrict the commercial chemical BECAUSE it is found in nature so it is obviously safe. Another example is that because volcanoes spew what we would classify as hazardous chemicals, regulation of the identical chemical used in commerce is unnecessary. This convinces people who don't want to be bothered with concern or change their habits.

What they do not say is that the human body is limited in its capacity to handle the chemicals whether they are from nature or commerce. Add them together and there is trouble.

Same with the ecology of planet earth and its atmosphere.

Anyway, industry has been successful with the argument for decades.
