Look at what you get for a medical checkup in Thailand ($381)
It's unbelieveable the value you can receive by getting your health care outside of the U.S. Unfreaking-lievable! All of these tests in a hospital or clinc would run many thousands of dollars in the U.S. for an uninsured person. This hospital was profiled on 60 Minutes some time ago in a medical tourism segment. It's becoming a place of last resort for the uninsured who have some means to pay for their own medical care to get their life-saving operations. Pretty much 1/10th the price of the U.S. with comparable quality care.

1. India too.. They even have luxury resorts nearby
so you can hang out in luxury while you wait for test results, or after surgery.. 60 Minutes did a big piece on this a while back..

The doctors at this hospital trained at the best places in the US.. the patients have their own 24hr nurses, private rooms, tip-top all the way..and cheap.

4. Check out how the bhat trades against the dollar
That care isn't any cheaper for the Thais than healthcare in the US is for us. What makes it look so much cheaper is that the bhat is a disadvantaged currency, one that trades for fewer dollars than goods and services within the country are worth.

That currency is also why some of our shoes and clothing are being made there. Because the people are paid in cheap bhat rather than expensive dollars, it appears that they are working for much less than their American counterparts, even though it takes roughtly the same food, shelter, and basic medical care to support a worker in either country.

American workers aren't competing with third world workers who are willing to live on less as the corporations would have you believe. American workers are being asked to compete against CURRENCIES, and that is incredibly unfair.

The rich, of course, get a sweet deal. They can fly to Bangkok and check into a palatial hospital and get treated like kings for a tenth of what they'd have to pay in a US hospital when they translate the fee in bhat to what those bhat would buy in US dollars.

6. not only the rich
if you are in need of a life saving heart operation and don't have insurance in the U.S., what would you do?

Wait to drop dead or sell all your belongings and scrounge up the $10,000 or so dollars to get the operation? An operation that would cost six figures in the U.S.

10. warpy's point is that this package costs 14500, not 381
Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 10:10 AM by orangepeel68
It ends up being $381 to Americans because they can buy 14500 baht for $381.

8. It cost me $150 for a 3 tooth porcelain bridge here in the Philippines
When my Wife had a c-section delivery with a 3 day hospital stay the bill ran up to $1,500.

Nice hospital too.

9. American cigs in the Phillipines are only 50 cents a pack! Even the
ones made in the US (some US brands are also made there)
