NYT: Democratic Opponent of Clinton Criticizes Actions of Israel

When Tasini says he is anti-war he means he is anti-war:

Democratic Opponent of Clinton Criticizes Actions of Israel

WASHINGTON, July 25 — Jonathan Tasini, the antiwar candidate mounting a Democratic primary challenge against Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, said this week that Israel had “committed many acts of brutality and violations of human rights and torture.”

Mr. Tasini made the comments in a wide-ranging interview with a political blog, the Room 8, after he was asked if he believed Israel was a terrorist state, according to an audiotape posted Monday on the Web site, www.r8ny.com.

“It’s painful to say that, but when you fire missiles from sophisticated aircraft on unarmed civilians in Gaza, those are again, the definition to me of ... ,” he said, pausing to find the right words.

“Terrorism is a very heavily laden word,” he continued. “But to me, what the key thing is, what are you doing? Are your actions in violation of the international norms of the Geneva Convention, and so on? And I think it’s sad to say, but it’s clear, yeah.”

***

But he said that his comments were being misconstrued and insisted that he never claimed that Israel was a “terrorist state.”

At the same time, he refused to back away from his criticism of Israeli policy.

“I have been critical of Israeli conduct in the occupied territories — Gaza and the West Bank — and in the current conflict, in the same way that I have been absolutely critical of Hezbollah,” he said.

1. He's brave and right. I'd like to see his stance turn out to a positive
turnout for him.

I don't think it will

7. It's win/win for Tasini. If he's smeared at least he's...
being noticed.

The strategy of MSM ( and of Clinton) has thus far been to pretend that he doesn't exist. ( In fairness, not entirely true of Times, but true of the rest.)

2. Another "too liberal" candidate according to the DLC.
We have to have a safe "not as bad" candidate that backs Bush.

3. If I lived in New York, he'd get my vote on that stand alone.
Unfortunately, any criticism of Israel from an American politician usually brings huge amounts of AIPAC money in against him/her if he has any realistic chance of winning.

We need to get all lobbyists money out of our political system.

25. Yes and Yes.
Lobbyist money out. Public financed elections! The irony about Tasini is that AIPAC hasn't actually attacked him yet. How could they? He's more Israeli than they are!

5. He's brave to do that -- especially in a state like NY
which has a large Jewish population. I have to say, at this point, I must agree with him on Israel's lack of proportionality, humanity, and it's policy of 'collective punishment". They have a right to defend themselves, but they crossed the line from defense to agression a long time ago.

Where are the American leaders... or even the Democratic Party leaders in calling for and DEMANDING a ceasefire? Since we single-handedly fund Israwel's agression, I believe we have that right. It needs to happen ASAP.

15. New York is 5 percent Jewish
And nearly all of that 5 percent is Democratic. And they are probably the most politically active group in New York State.

So...challenging one of the most powerful constituencies in the party is probably a bad idea.

12. A moment of clarity.
Bill wants to support Hillary, but will draw too much negative publicity to her, so he supports Lieberman who holds the same views as Hillary on both Iraq and Israel. By supporting Lieberman against Lamont, he is, in effect, supporting Hillary against Tasini.

Senate hopeful slams Israel's actions
BY GLENN THRUSH
WASHINGTON BUREAU

July 26, 2006

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's Democratic foe Jonathan Tasini says that Israel - where he spent his teenage years - is violating international law and terrorizing civilians in Lebanon and Gaza.

When asked if Israel was acting like a "terrorist state" during an interview with the political blog Room 8, Tasini seemed to respond in the affirmative.

"It has certainly committed many acts of brutality and violations of human rights and torture," said Tasini, an American Jew who lived in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem from 1971 to 1980 with his father, a university professor.

***

Tasini, who said his father fought "shoulder to shoulder" with assassinated Prime Minister and Clinton family friend Yitzhak Rabin during Israel's fight for independence, accused the senator of political pandering. "For simply pure political reasons, Hillary Clinton will not stand up and say the violence must stop - and that's costing lives," he said. "She's no friend of Israel when she essentially endorses this kind of war."

24. We need reason in debate
I guess it takes courage to be reasonable. I always thought Hillary Clinton was at least courageous. Now that I've seen real courage, Hillary looks more and more like another paid professional lobbyist.
