Clinton is doing this as he sees the far left fringe of his political party gaining power within the party and understands that is a disaster.

He understands politics and fully understands how important the 'middle' is for Dems.

Fringe left groups can win few statewide elections and will be an embarrassment on the national stage. See Howard Dean circa 2004.

I should know. I consider myself a "mainstream" Democrat. More liberal than Dawg, but a committed Democrat nonetheless.

Like the two thirds that say the war in Iraq was a mistake and want to bring the troops home? Or the fringe that want universal healthcare? Or the fringe that see that trade agreements like NAFTA just lower their wages and benefits? That fringe?
