Q: Is the country closer to a civil war?

SEC. RUMSFELD: Oh, I don't know. You know, I thought about that last night, and just musing over the words, the phrase, and what constitutes it. If you think of our Civil War, this is really very different. If you think of civil wars in other countries, this is really quite different. There is - there is a good deal of violence in Baghdad and two or three other provinces, and yet in 14 other provinces there's very little violence or numbers of incidents. So it's a - it's a highly concentrated thing. It clearly is being stimulated by people who would like to have what could be characterized as a civil war and win it, but I'm not going to be the one to decide if, when or at all.

2. Rummy needs something to focus his mind
The abstract thought of a hundred Iraqis a day getting killed in their own country at the hands of their fellow countrymen and the U.S. military is just too "out there" for him to really get a grasp of it. Maybe if we plopped him down in the middle of Anbar province for a few days, it would get his attention?

Confidence that we are going to hell without the protection of a handbasket.

6. Funny...
here is - there is a good deal of violence in Baghdad and two or three other provinces, and yet in 14 other provinces there's very little violence or numbers of incidents.

From 1861 to 1865 there was a good deal of violence in Virginia and 5 or 6 other states, yet in the rest of the country there was very little violence or numbers of incidents.

As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.
