Same statue, different name planned for judicial center

OREGON — A statue originally tagged “Demeter Over Illinois” by its artist, will stand in front of the Ogle County Judicial Center as early as this fall, with one major modification — its name.

Warned by some area religious leaders and several board members that the name “Demeter,” Greek goddess of the harvest, might unnerve the some of the county’s Christian residents, the county board voted to change the name last month to “Agriculture, Mother of Civilization.”

Now, some ministers say they’re pleased with the county board’s decision to give the five-and-a-half-foot tall statue what they see as a more appropriate tagline. But the statue’s sculptor, David Seagraves, sees the change as a bit of a cop-out.

1. C'mon.
I have been posting about this for months, in the Illinois forum, in the rural/farm forum, and in the progressive Christians forum.

This is my county seat. I was heavily involved in the fight to keep the statue.
