"End of the Spear" or "how I learned to stop worrying and love christians"
In this small town in Indiana where I live when I am at school, we have one movie theater. I sell tickets on the weekend. This is serious fundie territory. One of the bestselling boardgames is called "Rapture". Anyway, this week, we are getting a movie called "End of the Spear". I checked IMDB and it seems to be a movie the pompous asshole self-righteous fundies will love. But has anyone seen it? The review on the first page is pretty obnoxious to me as it is.

Im not anti-God, or anti-Christian. But I resent the whole "they were bad till we converted them" mindset.

1. I'll wait for major reviewers to tackle it
Until then, it might be a good story that will stand up on its own merits. It might even make a few fundies who've been sold the Calivinist bill of goods think about what being Christian really means. Then again, it might just be some dumb rah-rah missionary, convert the savages for their own good kind of flick.

All we have is the fundy word for what this film is. Keep an open mind. If it sucks, we'll know soon enough to avoid wasting our money on bad art.

2. actually some fundies are pretty upset over the movie
Chad Allen, a former child star, is cast as Nate Saint and Steve Saint in the movie. The fundies are upset over the fact that Allen is gay

3. I know the story.
It's based on Elizabeth Elliot's Through Gates of Splendor. Her husband was a member of Missionary Aviation Fellowship - Jim Elliot. They were down in Ecuador evangelizing the Quicha indian tribes and then moved to the Auca indians - a rather hostile tribe. Anyway, they all get killed.

I dunno, I never thought of Elizabeth Elliot as a real RW whacko type. The movie may actually be pretty good. The book is very interesting.

5. White man venture into tribal country, white man sometimes die

No matter the tribe..or color of the tribesmen..

Tribal people have lived "their way" for too long to measure. They resent interference. It's as simple as that.

Would a devoutly evangelical community welcome Hassidic Jews or Islamic Imams showing up in their towns...bent on converting them?

It all really comes down to what most of our Moms told us.. "Mind your own business" and "Leave other people alone".
