PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE SAYING REPUBLICANS SWITCHED PARTIES IN CT
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 10:09 PM by Atman
It didn't happen.

I've responded to this same meme at least half a dozen times today. So many on DU want to say CT republicans somehow influenced the election by switching parties at the last minute.

It didn't happen.

Republicans had to switch party affiliations four months ago in order to vote in the democratic primary. Four months ago Lieberman was 20 point ahead of Lamont, and only the most pessimistic (or prescient) Republican could have foreseen Ned's final surge.

Indi's and new voters had until Monday at noon to register democrat. But not republicans. They had to switch parties by May 10th.

People...forget the repubicans. Savor this victory. We did it ourselves!

1. Though there are a lot of republicans who flatter themselves by
calling themselves "independent" when they're really not. That does exist and all.

12. You are totally right
there is a logical argument to be made for saying that republicans voting didn't make an outcome, but at the same time it would be foolish to think that they didn't effect the outcome.

The fact is two Republicans I know voted in the primary and they voted for Joe.

Ask yourself why a republican (registered as an independent to flatter himself) would register as a Democrat vote in the primary. Would they vote pro-Bush and pro-war, or would they vote Anti-Bush? Of course they would vote for Lieberman because Ned's rising profile has only hurt them and they know that.

4. New voters should have been our focus since before 2000.
Every time I brought this up, I was told screw them, we need to focus on "moderate" voters who are "undecided." Well, that strategy lost us every major election since Clinton left office. I plan on being able to say "I told you so" after November.

15. 29,000 since May 10th - the date that Rethugs could've switched
to Dems? If so - wow! How many total voters in CT? What proportion of CT voters is 29,000?

:kick:

8. I'm hearing the same crap in Texas
Go for the moderates. Gotta have the moderates.

Who are the moderates when Rove has moved the right WAAAAAAAAY out there and, based on my understanding of the concept of "center," the right has moved just a bit?

Hmm, DLC, are you listening?

10. I know that 11k of the 20k were unaffiliated voters
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 10:53 PM by insane_cratic_gal
The Hartford Courant has one side effect of the Lieberman-Lamont primary contest: "From May through Friday, 11,496 unaffiliated voters became registered Democrats. From May through the end of July, 10,344 new voters became registered Democrats."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/08/05/20000-people-register-as_n_26614.html

3 days ago there was a mention that 20k NON affiliated (independents)... signed up to be democrats.

Most independents I know .. tend to vote republican.. or in this case is not possible it wasn't a landslide because 20k newly registered democratic formerly independent voters voted for Joe?

We didn't get the landslide we were hoping for and polls were certainly off, Going in Lamont had a much larger point spread.

So something happened,

It great that we won it, the problem still is keeping the momentum moving forward. Perhaps giving Indies a 4 month dead line just like republicans might help stop such things from happening
