what will they say about the *techniques* used by Scotland Yard
to seemingly foil this apparent plot?

That may be key to the spin-- for both sides. Did they use techniques that approximated
the additional police state tactics desired by the fascists here?

Or were they restrained in the "powers" they had, but cracked the case using old-fashioned
intelligence, infiltration, etc.? Was there massive NSA-style electronic eavesdropping
involved? Specific, targeted surveillance?

These facts may be critical for how both the libertarian left and the totalitarian right construct narratives in the aftermath....

the libertarian right and the totalitarian left... construct

i like to read all sides

fwiw, england has (in many respects) much less strict restrictions :) on police intel gathering than the US does, in a de jure and a de facto reality

they have incredibly extensive video surveillance conducted by police throughout london (and other areas).

they have no exclusionary rule (in usa civilian lenforcement, improperly obtained evidence is subject to fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine)

they have no 1st amendment protection against self-incrimination (in british law, failure to give an account on one's behalf after arrest CAN be used against you)

and generally speaking (this is a broad topic) they have more extensive search and seizure powers

they also have more involvement of the military within their borders for internal security (and not just in so called northern ireland)

4. the Repubs may be gleeful about getting more video surveillance
on us...

But didn't Parliament recently push back against Blair on a proposed expansion of police powers?
