Bush lifts Dem talking point GOP once objected to
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 03:38 PM by Fighting Irish
A phrase once considered so partisanly Democratic that House leaders objected to its use in House communications has been lifted by President Bush in a statement today, RAW STORY has learned.

The term "culture of corruption" has appeared in numerous Democratic releases and statements over the past several months. At one point, sources told RAW STORY that some Congressional Republicans considered it so partisan that they requested it not be used in certain official communications.

However, Republican President Bush today opened a statement with the following:

"For too long, the culture of corruption has undercut development and good governance and bred criminality and mistrust around the world. High-level corruption by senior government officials, or kleptocracy, is a grave and corrosive abuse of power and represents the most invidious type of public corruption. It threatens our national interest and violates our values."

1. Hmm, what's up with that?

I think Mehlman used the phrase yesterday, too.

Edit: yes, he did.

Democrats called the speech as damage control.

CLEVELAND (AP) — A "culture of corruption" in Ohio politics should inspire voters in search of change to show up at the polls, not hurt Republican candidates for governor and U.S. Congress in the scandal-saturated state, the leader of the national GOP said Wednesday.

"The voters are going to decide if the people on the ballot reflect a culture of corruption or do they reflect a reformist mentality? Are they reformers?" Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee, told reporters after speaking at The City Club, a free speech forum.

Democrats dismissed Mehlman's visit, which also included a stop at a rally for U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, calling it damage control.

Republican-run Ohio has been plagued by scandal, the most recent development coming Monday when U.S. Rep. Bob Ney said that he would not seek re-election to a seventh term. Ney is under scrutiny for his ties to Jack Abramoff, a lobbyist at the center of a congressional corruption scandal. He denies all wrongdoing and has not been charged.

2. You've Got To Wonder Who Wrote That For Him
Because its a statement that required greater skill with the language than the man possesses.

I have no doubt that he did not realize that it describes himself to the letter.

3. Cheney's sweating his balls off...
Actually, they're probably trying to coopt it so that when Dems use it, people will think they mean Uganda or something.

5. They always steal from the dems...
they throw out the bait and the dems try to answer back (weakly) and then they take certain points and use them as though they were theirs. Now the dems are afraid to say anything.

He's trying to get out in front "Like he's cleaning up" and not apart of the corruption.

Edit: The Rovians always try to preempt everything. Like the LeMont win, they were ready to go on the offensive. As always we we're left defending ourselves.
