Yard signs in a townhouse community?

I'm told by our management company that we are not permitted to post a yard sign in support of a political candidate(s) in front of our townhouse per management bylaws. Upon reading our lease, nowhere does it read that we are forbidden from doing such. Are we subject to the bylaws that they speak of, or are we really free to post a yard sign in front of our home?

That's what we have here.

HOWEVER, since you are responsible for what's INSIDE, you can probably get around it by putting it up in your window from the inside facing out. :)

...Homeowner's Association that governs townhome/condo properties.

WE used to live in a condo. The lease was the rental/owner agreement that mainly dealt with
paying rent and those sorts of issues.

The Homeowner's Association guide/manual is a separate document that lists all of the "do's and don'ts."

Usually, when you sign a rental agreement, there is some language about following the Association bylaws.

Your agreements/arrangement may be different than my experience--but this is my general sense of things.

6. It's in your Declaration of Restrictions, not your lease.

You need to get a copy of your Declaration of Restrictions, as that's where you'll find it. Likely something about erecting any sign (other than a "for sale" or "yard sale" sign) on any of the grounds. Most townhouses, you don't own the dirt (though you may have a back yard area) in front of your place.

I own a townhome in a condominium neighborhood. I can post a sign in my window but not on the front lawn which is OK with me. Check the rules of your homeowners association. You should have received a copy when you purchased your home.

Edit: All homes in my neighborhood must be owner occupied. (You can have a roomate though.)
I don't know if your situation will be different if you lease.

9. I just changed my oil last night in my Townhouse parking lot

Of course I'm a model resident, so nobody's going to call the Townhouse fuzz on me. I also break the sign rule every 2 years. Never got a fine.

Stupid rules are meant to be broken IMO. ;)

I used to be on the board of directors of our townhouse association.

Most associations probably have rules on placing things on the "common elements" -- such as a yard. They may or may not have rules about placing signs in windows. That is probably a safer route. You'll have to check your CC&Rs. They apply to renters as well as owners.

Also, depending on what state you're in, there may be state laws that supersede townhouse regulations. Here in Arizona, you can post a political sign in your window within 60 days (IIRC) of an election, even if the association rules forbid it.

11. What do the HOA by-laws say?

If the Homeowner's Association by-laws say "no signs," then no signs for you. In my experience as a renter, tenants are always required to abide by the rules of HOAs.
