Thank you everyone and anyone who contacted them about this. The progression went from Iraqi woman to "the female" now to a little girl. Good job. Now, to hold those murderers responsible responsible.

1. That is very good news
My daughter just turned 16. She's a girl, not a woman.

3. Yeah, but she's not a little girl.
I know it's quibbling, but I have too much fondness and respect for kids that age to refer to them as "little girls".

5. some are. Perhaps Abeer was one that is still a "little girl"
I know lots of teenagers and some are more mature, some stay little girl for longer. It all depends.

9. Whatever her maturity, this attack is still the ultimate assault on...
an Iraqi Muslim girl or young woman. Not to belittle rape in Western civilisation, rape in an Islamic world is to all intents and purposes a death sentence to the victim, or at best a life of shame.

And what of the comparable assault on the father. Again there are huge cultural differences. By assaulting his family this way they essentially emasculated him. How helpless would he have felt in the days leading up to the abominable finale as his daughter was stalked by these men and he could take no action against them?

Was he killed as an impediment to the planned rape? Or as a witness who could not be left behind? The answers there will mean a great deal.

And the assault on the mother. Did she die before or after her children's screams started?

Few, if any of us, know how this poor girl suffered, but others suffered just as unimaginable hurts of their own. And we should not forget them.

I heard a report on the BBC early this week and they referred to her as a 13 year old girl.
