2. How many fucking times am I going to type this today?
1. Concentrated peroxide is ROCKET FUEL. Incredibly dangerous. The shit at the store is 3% solution. The concentrated stuff launches missiles and rockets.

2. The Gatorade bottle was the CONTAINER.

CONCENTRATED PEROXIDE (i.e. ROCKET FUEL) within a CONTAINER.

This isn't magical thinking, folks.

(lather, rinse, repeat)

Pardon my shadenfreude, Will, but I've been in that spot and it gives me the uber jollies to see others bang head... and not in a good way.

I work in an office full of very accomplished writers... all with quirky (for a few, that is being kind) personalities... that being said, I admire your spunk.

Come to Long Beach, CA on that next book signing tour and the b/f and I will buy you an ale.

26. Umm...Will:
Did they mention anything about a platinum catalytic screen? Because as I remember it(from my father who had a degree in chemistry), concentrated peroxide, when exposed to a platinum screen, becomes a strong thrust propellant. It could be explosive if the reaction took place in a confined space, I reckon.

37. Fuel Used For German JATO Units In WW II
The use of H2O2 as a propellant takes advantage of the decomposition of 70-98+% concentration hydrogen peroxide into steam and oxygen. The propellant is pumped into a reaction chamber where usually a metal (esp. silver or platinum) catalyst triggers decomposition, and the oxygen/steam that is produced is hot enough (>600 °C) either to be used directly or to combust a fuel. As a monopropellant (not mixed with fuel), it produces a maximum specific impulse (Isp) of 161 s (1.6 kN·s/kg), which makes it a low-performance monopropellant. The famous Bell Rocket Belt used hydrogen peroxide monopropellant. When decomposed to burn a fuel as an oxidizer, specific impulses as high as 350 s (3.5 kN·s/kg) can be achieved, depending on the fuel. Peroxide was used very successfully as an oxidizer for the low-cost British launchers, Black Knight and Black Arrow.

31. I'm no chemist, but it didn't eat through the plastic drums we kept it in
So it's possible, at least, that there is some property of plastic that resists its corrosive capabilities.

I'm not saying that they had a good plan, just that concentrated hydrogen peroxide is a serious, grown-up chemical.

3. Personally, I want to know how these people got their hands on it...
normal hydrogen peroxide is too low in concentration, and has been stabilized so it is not possible for it to be used in such a manner.

You would have to have access to a industrial grade source of hydrogen peroxide for this to work.

24. Very Easily
You can order it in bulk (30%-50% concentration) for about $2 per gallon. It is more expensive in small quantities. It is commonly used to treat wastewater and groundwater. Extremely nasty stuff.

I'll bet you a fifty that some study has shown viewers without a preference generally will stop on the channel they see the banner Breaking News upon. And the 24 hour news channel is all about the selling of advertisements, even in these longer stints without commercials - because if they can impress you with their coverage right now, you're likely to go back and see their commercial-filled coverage later.

Israeli invention detects TATP explosives
By: Israel Insider staff and partners
Published: January 27, 2005

A relatively new difficult-to-detect explosive material called triacetone-triperoxide (TATP), commonly known as acetone peroxide, is one of a group of explosives based on the unstable peroxide group of
compounds. It is increasingly being utilized by terror groups, who used it in the Dolphinarium Disco massacre, several bomb attacks in downtown Jerusalem, and the failed attempt to down a passenger plane by Muslim shoe-bomber Richard Reid.

One of the most alarming attributes of TATP is that it cannot be detected by bomb-sniffing dogs, making it easier to smuggle into airports and onto airplanes. It is also very easy to synthesize in clandestine labs, using readily available chemicals.

"To our great surprise," PET's inventor, Prof. Ehud Keinan, Dean of the Technion's Faculty of Chemistry, wrote in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, "we discovered that TATP is very different from all other conventional explosives in that it does not release heat during the explosion. It explodes by rapid decomposition of every solid-state molecule to four gas-phase molecules. This rare phenomenon, scientifically known as 'Entropic Explosion', is reminiscent of the rapid reaction that produces gas in the safety air-bags of cars during accidents."

25. I remember when a Brazilian electrician
Jumped a subway turnstile, ran from the cops, wore a heavy winter jacket in warm weather, had a wire protruding from his clothes and was shot in the head by a British cop.

It turned out the only thing that was true was that he was shot in the head by a British cop.

We have good reason to be skeptical about the British authorities.

35. You lot sound just like a bunch of repbulicans belittling an opponent.
"Oooh scary." Runnning around in circles flapping my hands like a poof. "Oooh, make mine blonde tips."

Have you any idea how infantile that sounds? And just how much it will damage us all if these less than believable "Plots" holds a shred of truth, or even gains traction with the public as the "truth" regardless of reality?

Fight it as a furphy/red herring by all means. But fight intelligently. Attack the alleged plot on it's reall merits or lack thereof. Save your ridicule for their egg on the face momnets, because sure as hell any such moments of our own will see a hell of a lot more airplay than theirs.

Both hydrazine and peroxide in their concentrated forms are both extremely volatile chemicals which potentially could be taken aboard an aircraft and used to do much mischief. I could easily visualise either of these substances being used to take a plane out of the sky.

Then there is the first idea I had when I read of the cola + mentos trick. Simply carbonate a suitable flamable liquid and with any sort of ignition source one has a crude but effective single shot flamethrower.

The plot itself might be utterly incredible. It might be a complete fabrication of certain parties for the purpose of distracting public attention.

However, unlike the last couple of "terroist plots foiled", the bruited plan of attack is this time, very plausible and could be done with frightening ease.

Prove the reports a fabrication by all means, but don't make the mistake of, laughing too hard while the Republicans steal yet another election.
