What's the point of disallowing beverages bought IN THE AIRPORT on
the plane?

This is confusing to me.

If I buy a bottle of water or juice or whatever in the airport (after going through security), it's assumed to be secure, right? So why I can't I take it on the airplane?

I'm just imagining my SO's almost-four-year-old on a plane during one of thsoe ground delays where the flight attendants have to be ready to move THIS INSTANT but it could be hours: "I'm thirsty." "Sorry, we don't have any water, and the flight attendants can't give you any until we're in the air." "But I'm THIRSTY." This happens in the car sometimes, if we don't bring water with us (which we generally don't unless it's a long trip). She hasn't figured out that sometimes, she just has to deal with being thirsty and it won't kill her. The whining will continue until she either gets a drink or she gets bored. On a plane, I can imagine a 90-minute "I'm thirsty!" wail, in which other kids will probably join, and the other passengers going bonkers.

I'm glad I'm not flying anytime soon.

1. and how do you commandeer a plane with nail clippers?
It just shows to go ya that the whole terror response
thing is pretty knee jerk on one level.

Also, sorry, but I think it is also part of the fear
awareness campaign our leaders need to stay in power.
Ooooh, gotta confiscate your lipstick. Terrists ya know!?

2. I flew tonight. It sucked.
But, then again, it usually does.

It was raining in Minneapolis, and I almost joked that I had inadvertently gotten some rainwater on my clothing on the jetway, but thought better of it.

There wasn't a ton of shampoo and deodorant left in the box by security. I guess everyone heard.

The overhead compartments were nearly empty, however. I haven't seen that ever. I guess most of us regular commuters decided to check our bags rather than the normal carry on. Added an extra half hour to get home. I guess everyone will adjust. I guess powdered toothpaste and solid deodorant are the new way to travel.

3. Me too and yeah it did
The extra four hours to fly home today was mostly because of weather but getting from the luggage check-in onto the plane was an ordeal. And it is possible that the emptied containers of airport purchased liquids could be used to transfer suspect liquids that still get through? Case in point - on the first leg of my trip today, the Lansing airport was doing double checks of carry-ons. At the boarding checkpoint (total search of all contents), it was surprising to see what had gotten through the normal screening process (especially considering the "extra attention" my bags got today). They were chunking a surprising amount of stuff.

Meanwhile, nail clippers are OK now! :D (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1012.shtm)

5. Carry-ons are allowed but may not be worth the hassle.
The TSA further reports laptops, cell phones, etc., are still permitted on the plane.

9. The TSA web site has the scoop
www.tsa.gov

The above poster is correct re: UK flights; US flights aren't being restricted nearly as badly.

13. On domestic flights...
the only real difference is that you cannot have anything that is liquid or a gel in your carry-on except for a few things like prescription medicines and baby formulas. No beverages can be brought on the plane and all shoes have to be x-rayed. My blood pressure meds got a bit of extra attention today but the One-a-Day multivitamins required a supervisor to approve (no kidding). :D Next week the vitamins will go in the checked bag to save time!

11. It's possible to sneak in prohibited items in a body cavity.
And unless they want a passenger rebellion and a good deal of illness, they're not going to say "no liquids at all" on a Chicago-to-London flight. If someone really, really wants to blow up a plane, it'll get done sooner or later.

Point being: These are feel-good measures that will do little except make passengers simultaneously terrified but reassured that the government is doing all it can.

10. This is such bullshit.
I'm a former airline ticket agent. I started before any kind of security measures at all, and I remember well when they were first in place, to stop the hijackings to Cuba. I'm driven absolutely crazy every time I fly these days, and sometimes get into arguments with security about my embroidery scissors. Which I was able to bring with me back in May on a trip from Kansas City to Traverse City, Michigan.

They are not, and never have been, thinking clearly about security.

And how much do you want to bet that in a few days we'll learn that the 21 supposed plotters were a group of blowhards who simply talked big. Any takers?

12. I'll bet you
that even if they were just big talkers, you wouldn't really know about it, or atleast that won't be the "official story". Remember: the media controls the government and the government controls the media: "Fox News"
