Evidence Bush is failing: al Qaeda is thriving
Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 09:37 AM by NewYorkerfromMass
I heard a commentator last night explain that whatever we are doing to combat al Qaeda- it obviously isn't working.

After 9/11 we should have been going directly after al Qaeda, as we started to do in Afghanistan, and break it up from top to bottom. The fact that the British plot involved so many suspects, with such sophisticated methods, and on a scale to rival or exceed 9/11, shows that, if anything, al Qaeda is growing in both size and sophistication, as they find ways to exploit weaknesses in our security and inflict damage. In sum, al Qaeda is now an even bigger threat than 5 years ago. The commentator said that this development is profoundly troubling, since at this point, 5 years down the road, we should have all but dismantled al Qaeda. Instead, they are multiplying, and so are the threats.

Our mission then, is to get the rest of America to realize this- Bush sucks when it comes to fighting terrorism. And the more they keep talking about these terror plots, the more it helps us, because the more obvious it will be that Iraq is a huge and unnecessary waste of resources, as they overlook the real battleground in terrorism. So we should look at this news as further evidence that this administration is completely inept at fighting terrorism- Bush has failed!

Again, the grave truth today is that the developments in London have left real terrorism experts profoundly troubled!

3. At one time the estimated number
of al Qaeda members was 60,000. For what they have spent on the Iraq war, they could have spent $5 million each catching them. Of course for every one of them that got a blow job they would spend $40 million more, but they would have still caught many.

5. I thought there was no al-Qaeda
And even if there was, these plotters seem to be acting on their own. The question is: why were these home grown 2nd and 3rd generation Britons prepared to kill so many of their own countrymen? This is a British (and European) problem that will require European solutions.

6. It seems pretty elementary, doesn't it? We have 10X more terrorist since W
attempted to make us "SAFE." Absolute correct...he if FAILING. He is going BACKWARD. He is making us LESS SAFE. Instead of the right wing extremists recognizing this, they keep heaping praise on him for protecting them from the very stuff he has caused. It is bizarro-world on the right!

US Democrats say plot shows Iraq war a diversion

WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Prominent Democrats said on Thursday a foiled plot in Britain to blow up U.S.-bound planes showed the Bush administration's pursuit of war in Iraq had diverted resources from the bigger threat of terrorism and made the danger worse.

...

"Five years after 9-11, it is clear that our misguided policies are making America more hated in the world and making the war on terrorism harder to win," Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts said.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Bush and Congress needed to change course in Iraq and ensure Americans are protected around the world.

"The Iraq war has diverted our focus and more than $300 billion in resources from the war on terrorism and has created a rallying cry for international terrorists," Reid said.

Lieberman compares terrorists to Nazis, calls for unity

WATERBURY, Conn. -- U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, in his first campaign appearance since launching his independent re-election campaign, likened terrorists to Nazis and called for Republicans and Democrats to work together to combat them.

"We are at war with a brutal enemy," said Lieberman during a campaign stop Thursday at a Waterbury pizza joint. "How the heck can we be in a battle in which we are fighting as Democrats and Republicans against each other when these terrorists certainly don't distinguish based on party affiliation? They want to kill any and all of us."

"I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us - more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous that the Soviet Communists we fought during the long Cold War," Lieberman said.

...

"If we just pick up like Ned Lamont wants us to do, get out by a date certain, it will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England. It will strengthen them and they will strike again."

Bush says Foiled Plane Plot "Stark Reminder" that United States

BUSH SAYS FOILED PLANE PLOT "STARK REMINDER" THAT UNITED STATES "AT WAR WITH ISLAMIC FASCISTS"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060810/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush

The president laid the blame for the would-be attack squarely on al-Qaida-type terrorism.

........"This nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation," he said, his remarks carried live on television.

Bush spoke for just two minutes and took no questions. His brief message, aside from focusing on the "stark reminder" of the U.S.-led global war on terror, mostly appeared to be a promise that his administration was working to keep citizens safe.

"The American people need to know we live in a dangerous world, but our government will do everything we can to protect our people from those dangers," the president said...........

Chertoff: Plot 'suggestive' of al-Qaida

Chertoff: Plot 'suggestive' of al-Qaida

By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The terror plot disrupted in London is "suggestive of an al-Qaida plot," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday as the government issued its highest terrorism alert ever for commercial flights from Britain to the United States.

"There is currently no indication of any plotting in the United States," Chertoff said, but the government raised the threat level for all domestic and international flights.

Chertoff said officials cannot assume that the terror operation in Britain had been completely thwarted.

The U.S. government banned all liquids and gels from flights, including toothpaste, makeup, suntan lotion. Baby formula and medicines were exempted.

Chertoff said the alleged plot "was sophisticated, it had a lot of members and it was international in scope." He added, however, that "because the investigation is still underway we cannot yet form a definitive conclusion.".........

Chertoff said it was in "final stages." This "expert" on CNN just said
that he was told by a security person in UK that the terrorists were still trying to figure out which chemicals they wanted to use, whether to premix them, mix them on board, etc. That doesn't sound like "final stages" to me. To me, Final Stages means it has been figured out and rehearsed by the ones chosen to do it and reservations are being made to get everyone on the right flights to be in the air over the Atlantic or another ocean at the same time.
