Watched "V for Vendetta" last night. Relevant to all the fear-mongering...

... of late. Of the last few years, but especially the latest terror scares, and the posts today on the subject. Great film with the background (slightly) re-written to comment on the Bush administration.

I watched the "Making of..." segment on the DVD after, and I loved the way the actors and filmmakers danced around the subject. "We're not making any statements about anyone or anything specific... the hero is morally ambiguous himself... we're just putting stuff out there." It's like they're saying "I'm not saying... I'm just saying." (the old Paul Reiser routine). But they know damn well the film is a stark criticism of the Bushies, but they smartly deflect that so at least a few of the Bush faithful might get something out of it.

**SPOILER ALERT**
(Don't read below if you haven't seen it yet)

..

There's a plotline involving testing of medications, and viruses, on detained "terror suspects". Ummm, isn't this being contemplated now??? It's downright scary how some of this dystopian future resembles today's America. And this idea wasn't even floated in the press when this was written. We're living in an insane world where this can even be considered.

1. Oh yeah! They nailed it. Nicely updated the graphic novel to
include references revlevant to today.

Remember, remember the 5th of November!

2. About the movie and the graphic novel
It really isn't correct to say that the movie "updates" the graphic novel. Say, rather, that both deal with similar characters in a similar storyline, but exist separately with different points being made.

4. re: the testing on prisoners thing, they meant on volunteers.
And not terror suspects, but prisoners in the regular inmate population. The question was if there was such a thing as volunteering when in prison etc. They did not mean to say - as frankly, I read it from the headline when this popped up - that it meant forced testing. But that just means they didn't want to say it, ultimately.

8. Yeah, but this was a dystopian fantasy. Amazing how close we're becoming.
And if we're suggesting "voluntary" testing on U.S. citizen run-of-the-mill inmates, and if we torture "terror suspects" (about whom we really don't care whether they're citizens or not), it's not really a big leap to make to believe they're injecting detainees w/ viruses as we speak.

I'm not saying... I'm just saying.

11. Maybe not such a big leap, but unlikely to be true right now.
Not worth the trouble, and if word got out, *without* active crushing of a free press, it'd be messy. But, with the talk of Judge Dredd police powers in Britain, I don't want to sound like it's light years off potentially, either.

Just potential isn't always actuality.

5. Saw it...want to rent it...
***spoilers in this post. Don't read if you don't want to know details--or the ending of "V"

******************************************SPOILERS!!!***********************************

Great movie, huh? Definitely stays with you...like, for a decade or so.

I was really disturbed when I saw the latest news about the government wanting to allow drug/medical experiments on prisoners. This was posted on DU. I immediately thought of "V". It's downright terrifying how this administration is so eager to exploit and victimize people.

The movie was frightening--because you can envision America becoming like this. We're all ready headed in that path. The Patriot Act legalizes everything we saw in "V."

I loved the ending, which gave me hope. That sea of people flooding in front of Parliament was a thing of beauty.

What I took away from the movie was the importance of paying attention to what your government is doing. We cannot afford to fall asleep and assume that those who are driving--are not running us
off the road. Furthermore, I learned that you must shed your fear about fighting your government. You MUST fight. The greatest fear we all face, is not standing up to Fascist, evil pigs--it's losing our freedoms and losing our "selves" if we capitulate to thugs.

Gotta rent that. I need to see that sea of people at the end.

by the cast, the producers and the director about the film. I would rather they stood up for their convictions as to why they made the film and what it was really about than to pretend it wasn't about what's happening now. Because it is. NO doubt in my mind.

10. I can see that. But I think anyone really listening would get it.
It's obvious. I think they just chose to let the film speak for itself. That's why they made it, after all.

And I don't think people like Natalie Portman have been shy at all about criticizing Bush when it comes to public appearances.

9. Watched it last weekend. Posted about it.
Funny how it's building momentem by word of mouth. Very powerful movie, even though it stayed from the book.
