"Nowhere Man" (1995-1996) now on DVD -- predicted Patriot Act, spying
The UPN series "Nowhere Man," which aired for one season in 1995-1996, was finally released on DVD this week, in an amazing nine-disc set that contains complete shooting scripts for every episode. And I was immediately drawn to this exchange in the final episode of the series between Tom Veil, our protagonist whose life was "erased," and a Senator Wallace of the Intelligence Committee:

TOM: You know what this is all about?

WALLACE: I think I know what half of it was about. The Domestic Terrorism Bill which was before our committee last year, would have given the government vast powers to monitor the activities of all citizens. And with what happened at Oklahoma City and... and the... the World Trade Center... bill looked like a shoe-in.

TOM: But you argued against it.

WALLACE: Yeah. This bill would have trampled all over the fourth amendment. I don't believe the government should have the power, even in times of crises, to invade the privacy of ordinary citizens.

And when I remember this was written in 1996, I start feeling ... well ... weird.

4. Much of it filmed in Portland, OR
which makes it especially fun for locals to watch. They go to completely different parts of the city for consecutive scenes, or even the same scene with a different sequence or viewpoint, so it's like the city is all rearranged. I guess LAers and NYCers would be used to the effect by now, with all the movies and shows that chop them up.

Eerily prescient show.

7. I LOVED this show back in the "day." I was like 15...
But still, Bruce Greenwood is still in my mind one of the best actors of our age. This show proves my point, if you watch. It's nowhere near his brilliant turn in "13 Days", but trust me, watch this one.

I remember thinking that this show presented a very disturbing picture of the government and the shadows that surface during the day.

Honestly, I think this show is one of the 10 things that really changed me as a young adult. I started becoming more aware of politics, the gravitas of our current situation, and the potential with the computer age for the government to do anything they want.

It's a great show, check it out!

Thanks for posting the DVD info, I've been waiting for this for years!
