3. Close but no cigar!
A refrigerator should be expected to last how long on a reasonable man expectation? Surely longer than 5 years.

10. No... 5 years is just about right for the plastic trash they're making
today, especially the low-mid end range ones.

The top stuff, the sub-zeros, etc; come with a much more comprehensive warranty, but not the typical consumer plastic and paper stuff.

It's so hard to find anything decent AND affordable these days. I swear, before I do ANY shopping for appliances I spend hours reading about them on epinions and amazon and consumer rating guides. It's the only way to spend your money wisely. It's a real headache, and not the way it used to be, that's for sure.

Best of luck, and sorry for all your headaches.

11. the only difference between the cheepie and the high end ones
is the bells and whistles for the most part. What makes the refrigerator work is the same. So it should have a lifetime of 20 or so years. this based on the fact I have dissected many many products.

15. well here's a long shot, and something to keep in mind: Home buyer's
warranty. When you buy a house, you get one that covers everything for the first year, even your own appliances you've moved into the house. You have to pay for it every year thereafter, it's about $300 bucks.

A wise homebuyer KEEPS the warranty for as long as he owns the house and USES it for everything; electric, plumbing, water heater, HVAC, and appliances. It's worth its weight in gold in the long run. Depending on the policy you may have to add specific ryders to it, but worth a million bucks if you use it and the people that warranty co contracts with are good technicians.

As always do your homework. There are some warranty cos to avoid, and when you buy a house you can specify which one you want the seller to pay for. American Home Shield SUCKS, so they're ones to avoid.

4. I thought that only applied to vehicles?
It applies to other things too?

What's up with your fridge? I buried my dryer a month or so ago, and am about to bury my washer in the plot next to it this Thursday. I would love to know how this would apply should my new wash and dry friends turn out to be fair weather friends, know what I mean?

5. Well I found this.
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/maytag_ref.html eye opener for those interested in purchasing a Maytag, now Whirlpool appliances. The serviced the frig 3 times now gone for a 4th. Bought it in 2001 new. Aren't the damn things supposed to last a little longer than that?

6. I absolutely sympathize, but the problem is complicated by the fact...
...that refrigerators use coolants, and coolants are a touchy area in environmental law. Indeed, the compressor in your refrigerator cannot even legally be placed in a landfill without all sorts of certified efforts aimed at keeping whatever coolant it used from escaping into the atmosphere, among other myriad laws and regulations regarding their disposal.

More info about the precise nature of the problem regarding the refrigerator in question would be helpful to those of us here who might be able to formulate an answer.

7. On four different occasions now, the damn thing freezes up
on the side between the fridge and freezer and the temp in the frig part quickly rises to now 60 degrees, spoils all the fucking food, and freezes the crap out of the fresh vegies in the bin. I may have caught it in time this time.

8. That's a problem, alrighty, and for what it's worth:
1. It could be one of a dozen things: since I can't see it, test it, lay hands on it, I have no idea. If I were a bettin' man I'd say a faulty thermostat or blower motor, but since I'm not I won't.

2. Please keep in mind that nothing ever TRULY is made "colder" or "freezes" during the operation of such devices, whether they be refrigerators, air conditioners, or anything similar. All that is occurring when such units perform as advertised is that heat is taken, or "transferred," from one place to another.

3. There is a high degree of probability that repairing the defect as you describe it would be more expensive and/or entangle you in more hassles than simply buying an entirely new refrigerator - and disposing of your current one - would entail. That's what I'd suggest you do, with my limited information as you have described the situation.

4. Sorry that that's the best advice I could give you, but make sure with your next refrigerator you get a comprehensive warranty. It's well worth the hassle.

9. FWIW, side-by-sides...

...are energy hogs. If you get the opportunity to replace the fridge, switch to a top-bottom.
