cspan caller: "I'd rather be feared than loved" in the eyes of the world.
The topic is how America's image abroad is hurting business. The guest is promoting diplomacy and better manners from Americans abroad, he suggests that business is suffering because we are more hated than ever by the world and it's nations.

A lady from America was distraught because a Rude Italian chided her for yelling across a table to a fellow American in a restaurant. She said that she'd rather be feared than loved, and was insulted by the young man's bad memory regarding how we saved Europe's ass in WWII. She thought he was ungrateful.

No wonder, with bush as our face and our representative to the world, and women like her, we haven't got a chance in the international diplomacy department.

3. Which goes hand in hand with the Republican's new campaign song:
Bossy by Kelis

Aye Yo... You don't have to love me..... you don't even have to like me...... but you will respect me........

you know why cause Im a boss

You know, it's a hard pill to swallow
When they tell you you strange
You ain't hot
Then in the blink of an eye
They got on what you got
That means i'm a boss!

Uh uh... watch the beat go...
Uh uh... watch the beat go...
Uh uh... watch the beat go...
Uh uh... watch that beat go...

I'm bossy
I'm the first girl to scream on a track
I switched up the beat of the drum
That's right i brought all the boys to the yard
And that's right, i'm the one that's tattooed on his arm
I'm bossy
I'm the chick y'all love to hate
I'm the chick that's raised the stakes
I told John Sterling he should switch debate
I'm back with an 808 cause i'm bossy

Ooh lemme slow it down so ya can catch the flow
Screw it up make it go extra slow
Real girls get down on the flo
(on the flo get down, on the flo)
Ooh i gave you a taste you want some more
Touch down i got on it like a pro
I ride the beat like a bicycle, I'm icy cold
Ooh from the 6-4 hoppers up in crenshaw
The money makin playas up in harlem
Don't want no problems
We gon keep it pumpin while the 808 is jumpin

Diamonds on my neck, di-diamonds on my grill
Diamonds on my neck, di-diamonds on my grill

I'm bossy
I'm the first girl to scream on a track

9. So they want people so afraid of America that they'll bend to America's
will? They want other countries to live in fear of America, so much so that other governments will be too afraid to ever dissent with America? So scared shitless that when America says jump other countries immediately start jumping?

(coughbullycough)

I often wonder how much of a person's self-esteem is tied up in the country's world standing

You know, like if America is a "super-power" then that says something about them as a person.

oh well...

10. Being "feared" puts a target on you.......
I guess this woman likes being a target? Typical Republican behavior........might makes right. I'd much rather be respected than feared, and right now the US is the most HATED and feared country in the world. This makes for a very lonely existence, dangerous as well. I don't particularly like being the target of the world's scorn. I wonder what this woman's children are like?

11. Someone chiding her a little for her ordinary boorishness makes her...
...start talking about wanting "to be feared rather than loved?" What a drama queen. What an ego. Sadly, what an American stereotype.

BTW, even if you believe "being feared is better than being loved," being respected is best of all. America's real problem is that she is not respected--and, frankly, probably not worthy of it for at least the last several years.

12. That woman seems to think time stopped after WWII
According to people like her, everybody we helped back then is eternally indebted to us and should show it by supporting the US even if it means compromising their own principles.

Bollocks.

Let's be honest -- we got into WWII because the Japanese attacked us and Germany turned around and declared war on us. We had no choice. And it was in our strategic best interests to stop Hitler's march across Europe. Our allies certainly reaped the benefits of our involvement but it was far from an altruistic act on the part of the US.

Never mind that all of the countries in question have done numerous things for us in the 60 years since then.

Americans need to grow the hell up.

The ugly obnoxious and rude American is real, I've known many of them all my life. They are just as rude stateside, to waitresses, and all other who they consider servants while they are in Europe, which the consider a huge Disneyland.

17. It's a quote from Machiavelli
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 07:38 AM by Xipe Totec
"Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? It may be answered that one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, is much safer to be feared than loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with."

http://www.constitution.org/mac/prince17.htm

But he goes on to say...

"Nevertheless a prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred; because he can endure very well being feared whilst he is not hated, which will always be as long as he abstains from the property of his citizens and subjects and from their women. But when it is necessary for him to proceed against the life of someone, he must do it on proper justification and for manifest cause, but above all things he must keep his hands off the property of others, because men more quickly forget the death of their father than the loss of their patrimony."

31. In U.S. history classes children are taught that we saved Europe
in WWII. They are not told about how America waited for 2 years before getting involved while England and the rest of Europe was getting hammered due to an isolationist Republican congress who incidentally was making a lot of money off the German war machine. Can you say Prescott Bush? They are not told of 28 million dead Russians compared to 550,000 dead Americans and they are not told why the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Because we shut off their oil. So much American history is riddled with flaws. Not a big surprise that MacMillan/McGraw-Hill makes the textbooks for American schools and Harold McGraw of the Dallas, Texas based company is a good friend of George Bush.

39. A flaw in your statement
Congress had a firm Democratic majority in the 30's.
The 76th Congress (39-41) only had 169 Republicans in the House and 23 in the Senate.

Besides the flaw there's also a contradiction of sorts. On the one hand you seem to condemn the isolationists for not getting involved in Europe, and on the other you blame America for provoking the Japanese. So apparently we weren't involved enough in Europe, but we were too involved in trying to stem the Japanese onslaught by cutting off their oil. Which was right? Staying out, or getting involved?

34. A Matter Of Opinion
Historians do not all agree on that synopsis. In fact, most experts would argue that the Germans would have been able to hold on far longer against either of the Allied forces and that the two front war is what expedited the end.

Hollywood has nothing to do with the facts. The Allied bombing of the war machine, reduction of morale of the populace, and the ground fight of the Soviets put Germany in the end game stages. Without the bombing, the Soviet advances would have been far slower. Without the eastern front, the Allied bombing would have been less effective and damaging to the German war effort.

So, i would suggest both west and east won that war in Europe.

Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 10:09 AM by PointAndLaugh
It's more of like: Look at these dumbasses, what are they up to now? Look honey, another American debacle, live on TV. America and Americans are nothing more than entertainment in the eyes of the world. Kind of like Three Stooges, on a global scale.

As for saving Europe's ass in WWII, well that's highly debatable. Also, I think Russians would disagree as well. Hitler had no intention of stopping after conquering Europe, Africa, and Asia. Maybe for a few years to rearm and reposition. But US of A was next on his to-do list. Everybody knew this.

that when you're feared-fearful people tend to lash out more. When you are loved, those who may lash out will expect a backlash by the majority of all countries. That's why we had support from the world after 9/11, even ME countries-but our actions degraded the support and the sympathy.

45. Grand Canyon
Dialogue from Kasdan's 1991 production of 'Grand Canyon'

Simon: I've gotta ask you for a favor. Let me go my way here. This truck's my responsibility, and now that the car's hooked up to it it's my responsibility too.

Gangbanger: Do you think I'm stupid? Just answer that question first.

Simon: Look, I don't know nothing about you, you don't know nothing about me. I don't know if you're stupid, or some kind of genious. All I know is that I need to get out of here, and you got the gun. So I'm asking you for the second time, let me go my way here.

Gangbanger: I'm gonna grant you that favor, and I'm gonna expect you to remember it if we ever meet again. But tell me this, are you asking me as a sign of respect, or are you asking because I've got the gun?

Simon: Man, the world ain't supposed to work like this. I mean, maybe you don't know that yet. I'm supposed to be able to do my job without having to ask you if I can. That dude is supposed to be able to wait with his car without you ripping him off. Everything is supposed to be different than it is.

Gangbanger: So what's your answer?

Simon: You ain't got the gun, we ain't having this conversation.

Gangbanger: That's what I thought, no gun, no respect. That's why I always got the gun.
