CBS, NBC Clean Up Bush's 'Happy' Talk
http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=2948

During his August 21 press conference, George W. Bush responded to a question about the Iraq War by saying that "sometimes I'm happy" about the conflict. But many readers and TV viewers never heard the remark, since journalists edited the statement to save Bush any possible embarrassment.

Bush's unedited comment was as follows:

Q: But are you frustrated, sir?

BUSH: Frustrated? Sometimes I'm frustrated. Rarely surprised. Sometimes I'm happy. This is -- but war is not a time of joy. These aren't joyous times. These are challenging times, and they're difficult times, and they're straining the psyche of our country. I understand that.

Viewers of CBS Evening News (8/21/06) saw a carefully edited version of that response—one better suited to presenting Bush as serious and concerned with the effects of the war. Reporter Bill Plante previewed the answer by saying that Bush "conceded that daily reports of death and destruction take a toll, both on the nation and on him." The edited quote that followed:

Frustrated? Sometimes I'm frustrated, rarely surprised. These aren't joyous times. These are challenging times, and they're difficult times. And they're straining the psyche of our country. I understand that.

3. OMG, how crazy can he get? The lie that bothers me the
most is the one he repeats daily: "I understand..." in that condescending tone of his.

If I hear him say that one more time, I think I'm going to :puke: !

13. Talk about a freudian slip - -

BUSH: Frustrated? Sometimes I'm frustrated. Rarely surprised. Sometimes I'm happy. This is -- but war is not a time of joy. These aren't joyous times.

It strikes me that what he almost said was This is a joyous time, but caught himself and you get the pause before the "but war is not a time of joy".

After saying "Sometimes I'm happy" in the context of the war anyone can imagine him saying that war also brings him joy.

15. That first one was perhaps the most cold-blooded remark
I've ever heard from anything remotely resembling a human being. The rest of the nation was still in palpable pain, and they happily went off to bed, not a care in the world. Geez, they must serve up some good valium at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

22. What about the other news reports ?
ABC, CNN, etc. etc. One wonders just what it will take to make the corporate honchos aware enough. Tom Cruise's mouth finally got him in trouble. Bush makes gaffe after gaffe endlessly and yet the average American doesn't know.

Another reason why you need to get your real news from the Daily Show.

Jon Stewart played the clip all the way through and gave Bush the thrashing he deserved.

27. Interesting Brain Fart...
Methinks the chimpmeister was gonna try to find a way to sneak in the killing of Zarqawi or some other phony "victory" and say those things "made him happy"...but then the hard drive shifted to defense mode. He probably saw the evil snarl of Unca Dick. This dude is desperate to spin anything he can about these evil, ugly wars into some kind of "positive". And the corporate media loves to go along for the ride.

The other night, I heard a milqutoast media type trying to explain the way booooosh is covered with the cop out of "i'm trying to bring people together, not divide them...I don't like to write or report the negative stuff unless that's all there is to report". :barf:

Excellent catch!

28. K&R. They'd do this, therefore they'd do anything to cover for *.
"Sometimes I'm happy" as a headline would knock about 5 points off of *'s approval rating and plunge him into the 20's. The CBS crew showed some real smarts and loyalty in covering up for this insane remark. They will reap their reward in regulatory relief.
