Terrible day at work--freepers made my head explode
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 08:43 PM by Horse with no Name
Two of my co-workers (who were also my superiors) were literally making my head hurt. I bit my tongue so hard I thought I was going to scream.
Conversations swayed like this:
"My son is at his new university. He doesn't know anyone. There were some booths set up. One was for Republicans and one was for Democrats. His group got together and got a bunch of "Democrat" bumper stickers and held a bonfire"...what I would have liked to say was how typical. Republicans stealing things from Democrats and destroying them. Kind of like they have done to this country.:banghead:
So while I am sitting there charting on my patients, clenching my jaws, the other one pipes up. Says "George Bush is a wimp"...my ears perked up.."he gave in to that "abortion" pill." Grrrrr.....conversation drifted in and out of teens having babies, etc, I held my tongue as long as I could.
But...then they started talking about teens having herpes and other diseases. I didn't hold my tongue here...I said that it just goes to prove that abstinence does NOT work. Kids are going to have sex. Why not spend money educating these kids and giving them the necessary items to have safe sex. Remarking it would also cut pregnancy rates....they both looked at me like I stepped off of another planet...and remarked that it wasn't the government's job to teach kids about sex, it was the parent's job. My remark was that many parents don't do it and the kids need to hear the truth from somewhere. Would they rather their money be spent on babies born to teen mothers with herpes and genital warts or educating the kids how to protect themselves....crickets churped. No answer.
God I hate my job sometimes. I especially hate harboring the feelings that I am having now about co-workers who are otherwise nice.:(

1. And then, a ray of sunshine....
I had a guy like that in a company I work for. Made you want to pitch him out the nearest window.

I say "used to" because he just got fired, then arrested....for embezzlement and tax fraud :)

2. ...

Sorry about your day. I wonder what happened to critical thinking skills in this country. can no one take things to the logical conclusion anymore? doesn't any one think of the consequences of their (and our country's) actions?

as for the "abortion" pill, it is only despensed to ADULT women without a prescription so their argument was total BS to start with.

15. and it's not the abortion pill
The morning after pill primarily suppresses ovulation - it dosn't cause an abortion.

There is an abortion pill, though. I'm not sure if it's legal in this country but it seems like it is. You have to take a series of pills over a period of days and are supposed to be under a doctor's supervision .

20. "we" know that
but they can't wrap their heads around the fact that all it does is keep the egg from implanting on the wall--assuring a normal period.
Abortion pill sounds so much more series!

3. "Otherwise nice?" What does that mean? It seems to me that is
like saying "this big steaming turd would otherwise be good food if someone hadn't eaten and digested it."

5. You might rethink how "nice" they are...
I'm running into similar situations at my law school. My fiancee and I are both third-year law students in Oregon, and we're older than average (40 and 42). For the most part, our 20-something and 30-something classmates are solid and good, and no matter what side of the debate they're on, they recognize the need for a legal system that's accessible to all, and most of all, fair.

However, there are a few that make me want to dive headfirst off the library roof. For example, in a Constitutional Law class discussing Affirmative Action cases, one guy began a comment with, "Now, I don't have anything against black people..." Which meant, of course, he DOES have something against anyone who isn't white and a member of his particular religion which shall go unnamed but is concentrated in Utah. A fellow I respect and like at school was talking about one such douchebag and tried to convince me what a "nice" guy he is. He grew up largely on his own, taught himself how to read and write (no joke, the guy never went to school), and spends every weekend with his little brother. All commendable, but I've learned to stop evaluating people based on their treatment of people they LIKE. How does this guy treat other peoples' brothers? Especially those who have darker skin or different beliefs? I've come to believe that people who harbor that much hate are not nice, no matter how you slice it.

Sorry about your bad day! And sorry they are your superiors. Just one of those things you have to deal with. Sounds like you were professional and polite, and that says a lot about YOU. :)

Peace,

RV

In fact, I wasn't very clear in my original post. The second douche isn't Mormon, just a bigoted jerk.

Mea culpa.

8. You're gonna have to grow yourself a thicker skin.
These people are everywhere, don't let it get to you so much.

Here, this might help: Circle Wednesday November 8 on your calendar. That will be a real good day for you and a real bad day for them.

10. when i was in real estate my office was full of republicans
my managing broker was a tremendous asshole that referred to me as the "office lefter" until one day a client who didn't have a salesperson yet heard him say that, turned out the client was actually from the regional office and wasn't a client at all, he was a managing partner and he was not at all amused by the broker. About a month later "Ken" was sent off to a different area or at least thats what we were told and that was the end of non-office politics.

11. I struggle with this.
On the one hand, we are supposed to remember that these are our Countrymen and we supposedly have more in common with them than we do that which separates us. I have a lot of trouble accepting that. These people have nothing in common with me, they don't share my value system, it is obvious at the most elemental levels. They are content letting children starve as long as they have the decency to do it elsewhere, so they aren't troubled by the reality of their suffering and can maintain their illusions of their "Christianity". If Christ appeared today they would arrest him, commit him and forcibly medicate him for his "Messianic Delusions".

But I have to also tell you that a person wrote a an intelligent LTTE to the paper and included his e mail address which I took as an invitation to engage him, so I did. Later that day he sent me some choice excerpts of the responses he had received and I was appalled. I was a CPO in the Navy so I am not that easy to amaze linguistically speaking, but some of these people were downright uncouth. As my dear old Daddy always said, there are a hell of a lot more horse's asses than there are horses. But it tells me that many of us are no better.

It is sad it is this way and this division should certainly be a major portion of W's enduring legacy! Just a fool's opinion, worth exactly nothing...

13. There Are A Lot of Anti-Americans Living Off the Fat of This Land
They don't believe in the Constitution, Separation of Church and State, Checks and Balances, or the Bill of Rights (although they are the first to scream if any of their rights are abridged). They are morally and ethically corrupt, and assume that everyone else is worse, which justifies their breaking the laws and mores. They want to turn a great nation into a sick and twisted theocracy/fascist/military regime, and are nearing success.

They are ignorant and superstitious and proudly so, and they want their kids and yours to grow up to be just the same. And they don't believe at all that they have anything in common with you!

So you needn't feel guilty for feeling you have nothing in common with them.

YOu don't. For which give thanks every day.

16. I don't have the same problem . . .
. . . as I work in a humanities department at a college. But I wince when I hear the other teachers refer perjoratively and dismissively to students who respond in class discussions with a parentally or Fox News or church determined point of view from the Right.

There are ALWAYS going be Right-wingers in this country. And yes that does mean there's a moral, spritual and intellectual deficit on their part. But we don't do our side any favors when we see them as non-people or address them confrontationally. Granted, they're still going to lose their tempers and start whining when asked to actually defend their positions. But when they're driving home, make it so they're rethinking their positions, not just adding more fuel to their hate.

25. It wasn't long after they started burning books in Germany...
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 07:28 AM by Hubert Flottz
Until they were burning thousands of bodies a day at places like Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and Auschwitz III-Monowitz.

The Bushco Crime Family is working it's way to equal fame, one crime at a time. The same way the Nazis did.

Edit...Your "Terrible Day" could get a hell of a lot worse. Worse maybe than you or I care to imagine! Stand up for what you believe in.
