I'd really like to explore that phenomenon.

Any takers?

It's not as if thinking about this has kept me up at night, but hey, it is one of the great mysteries of the universe :)

1. Level ONE ....Lack of Definitions....unable to communicate clearly due to
small vocab and poor command of English.

Results in poor grammar.

They make it up with bravado, machismo, and arrogance.

27. You have a gift of clarity and insight
Arrogance equals narrow-minded defensiveness;insecurity and tenous self esteem - a fear of life and mortality that requires filters.

3. If they were educated, thier political opinions would be examined
Since thier beliefs don't stand up to even cursory examination, they tend to be either uneducated or simply unwilling to think (a condition that is often religiously induced.)

6. Mortal enemies
Don't you know semi-colons are of the Devil? And let's not even start with apostrophes. How can you trust any punctuation mark that doesn't rest on the line? Dotted letters are suspect, too.

8. I loathe freepers as much as the next DUer
but I also think that before we make fun of them for their grammer, we should take a look at the spelling and grammer that gets by on this board.

Today I saw a post about Fema "trailors."

Having said that, I think that a great many freepers never made it out of 3rd grade. :)

25. Still, trolls often give themselves away with their poor punctuation
and spelling.

I've known really bright people who spell terribly, but at least they try. Trolls/freepers don't seem to even try much of the time.

i agree that poor spelling and grammar can be seen across the political spectrum. however if one intends to create signage that is to call into question the intelligence of others (for instance calling someone an idiot or a moron) doesn't it make sense that one should also exhibit at least a little more intelligence than the target of the taunts?

edit: grammar

I have seen some really atrocious punctuation, grammar and spelling errors here at DU. I'm a copy editor, so I cringe when I see these errors and it is so hard to keep myself from correcting them.

But nothing compares with the Repukes at the RaptureReady forums. Check this out:

12. I've seen spelling and grammar from highly educated people that
requires massive amounts of editing to make coherent. While the "morans" and "Hughs1111!!!!!!" of the world are good for a chuckle, I would hate to focus too much energy on things that are ultimately irrelevant.

One of my favorite quotes..and I think it may have been Robert Anton Wilson (but I can't remember) demands that we "illuminate the opposition." Better to illuminate them on political abstractions than how to avoid using the passive voice, etc. :-)

14. Proper Use Of Punctuation Requires Some Level Of Thought. Freepers Aren't
so good in the independent thinking department, so when they are required to think it kinda throws em off.

15. They're stupid.
I'm not talking about posting on a message board, or writing an email to someone. These people are displaying lack of grammar knowledge on signs that they hoist in front of TV cameras; that they want to be seen; that is displaying their 'message', such as it is. You'd think there would be somebody in their crowd who would spot those errors and have them fixed, but apparently they're all that ignorant. That's the difference between freepers and Democrats. I've never seen such poor grammar on liberal protest signs.

17. They also have a tendency
on some message boards to post in all caps. I interpret this as a post which is shrill, and angry, and has to shout to be noticed. We sometimes use caps for a word or two, to make a point, but they scream all of their words. They are very angry people, aren't they?

20. Some are very well paid, actually, and will write whatever they are
instructed to write. I think they have ten templates that are passed around the country. If you do a Google or Yahoo search on a certain Freeper phrase, you'll find that it comes up with multiple authors' names in different cities. The LCD among Republicans is the willingness to dishonestly manipulate people for personal and/or selfish ends, at those people's expense.

18. It's not just that. It's spelling as well. Most
Freepers mispell the same words incorrectly. It's either a ploy to garner sympathy from other "non-Ivy leaguers or non-elites" or they actually are all really bad spellers. The former goes with the anti-elitist playbook of the Pukes. But the LCD among Freepers isn't spelling or grammatical competence. It's running interference as a non-questioning soldier or servant to a leader or master.

23. Corporate America and those damned Captain Underpants I suspect!
Corporate America did give us ketchup, Dunkin'Donuts, Krispy Kreme and those damned Captain Underpants books used intshunul incorrect spelling. My kids read those books in grades K-3, and since I think most freepers are still at those grade levels of reading and watch too much TV, I'm just assuming these things to be the culprits.

It's my theory and I'm sticking to it!

39. Illiteracy.
That is, functional illiteracy.

Literate enough to pass junior high, but too dumb to read any books.

That said, there's a big difference between making common grammatical mistakes and misspellings, which we see here at DU and any other educated place, and the illiteracy found at freerepublic or places like sites for Nickelodeon cartoons populated by children.
