Art Buchwald defies the odds by living.
In matter of life and death, the joke is on Buchwald

By Stevenson Swanson
Tribune national correspondent
Published August 27, 2006

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Mass. -- Art Buchwald was supposed to be entertaining angels by now.

In February, the ailing newspaper columnist said goodbye to his friends and checked himself into a Washington, D.C., hospice to await his final deadline.

But a funny thing happened to the man who has spent his life making readers laugh.

He lived.

So he did what he has done every summer since the mid-1960s. He came to Martha's Vineyard. He shows no signs of dying here, either.

4. It is wonderful to beat the reaper!
It gives one a new perspective on the preciousness of life. I was told by the Neurologist I had ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and had about eighteen months. I got everything in order and disposed of the majority of my stuff (well what I had left, this was a protracted & expensive medical process). This was in 2002. Here I am!

All I can say is LIFE IS GOOD! I have a new outlook and a different values systyem now, I realize much more clearly what is important.

5. Good humour that
Good to hear a person living and surviving as the hero, and not some militancy,
but a man of humour, and when we all should be 'just living' the bottom tears
at us, the drain of life sucking it all away, life long enough, and death another day.

Good to you, Mr. Buchwald. :toast:

6. One of my older dear friends defied the odds
he went down to houston and they opened him up and sewed him right back up and told him to go home and get his house in order, he said too hell with that, that he had a grandson to raise and he did just that, lived a decade longer, raised a damn fine grandson too.

6 months to live.
32 years later, he went to the doctor's funeral
