I saw "V For Vendetta" again...
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 11:00 AM by TwoSparkles
I saw "V" in the theater months ago, and we rented it last night.

When I first saw the movie, I thought "We're rolling in this same, oppressive
fashion." When I watched the movie last night, it felt like our country
had moved MORE toward the Fascist state that is depicted in the movie.

I get the feeling that much progress has been made by the neocons during
the last year. I didn't like that feeling.

The Patriot Act can define any of us as an "enemy combatant." They can now
spy on us, read our email/mail, fumble through our bank accounts, and detain
us indefinitely. The torture depicted in the movie, is all ready happening.
This administration uses the media and the media are propaganda tools of the
government--just as the movie shows.

Interesting that the movie depicted a viral outbreak that was released by
the government--and that important senior officials financially gained
from the cure. I still find it amazing that Donald Rumself was chairman
of Gilead, the pharmaceutical company that makes Tamiflu, from 1999-2001.
Rumsfeld currently owns $5 million in Gilead stock. Also, former Secretary
of State George C. Schultz currently serves on the Gilead board.

At the end of "V", when I saw it in the theater, I felt uplifted because of
the large mob of protesters who saved the day. Now, I just feel as if we
are truly marching toward the oppression and anti-American state showcased
in "V."

1. If you have not already done so
you should watch the film of 1984 too. It's ironical that John Hurt who plays the hero in 1984 plays the villan in V for Vendetta.

"college students are preparing to see how many people can be treated with the bird flu vaccine in an hour" the lady on the TV just said, in a story about college student volunteers preparing for a possible outbreak...

hmmmmmmm.... who stands to make billions off a worldwide flu with a viable innoculation that can save them from the threat...

all I wanna say is that a democrat better be allowed in the white house when they, again, win the election.

4. The actions of the one
gave power to the many... All it takes is one voice, like Cindy Sheehan to bring attention to the war... It is amazing that one person can have such an effect..

5. "The Patriot Act' doesn't say that Bush can label as "enemy combatants."
That is something Bush decided without an act of Congress.

Bush based it on a controversial World War II era decision involving Nazi saboteurs arrested in the US.

6. I saw a very interesting article
showing a significant increase of short-selling certain airline stocks a week before 9/11. As if someone knew those stock's prices would be coming down soon.

7. Then also remember that "V" is fictional exaggeration.
Undoubtedly a lot of people here think of the character V as the way they are acting, or would like to be. Remember that the original story was an elaborate fantasy by British writer Alan Moore (who, by the way, hated the movie and all movies based on his works).

V was a lone bomber and killer. The fantasy in the film was that, without any PR and without any clear agenda, he managed to get most of a nation on his side to overturn the government and wear his facemask. (In a real fascist environment, who the hell did he get to make and ship those facemasks?)

The story ought to appeal to people who think that, for instance, they can overturn what happened by going around refusing to say "President Bush." They call him "pResdident" or "Resident" or "B*SH" or other childish crap, and think they're doing something real.

8. I viewed this film too, but
one needs to remember one thing: it was structured in the fantasy of FICTION! Evie's torture at the hands of V was constructed as only a "lesson," the point being that the torturer took pains not to annihilate the victim, only took the necessary time and expense to retrain her brain so she could participate in civil disobedience movements and that other crazy word: "CHANGE."
