"Come Hell Or High Water" -- necessary viewing and reading!
I'm so surprised that this was announced by Viva, yet no comments on it. Did anyone besides me see this excellent program?

Dyson is always good, but his scathing review of the treatment of poor people in this country is NECESSARY to understand, if Dems truly want to get back in power. Cuz they ain't gonna get there without poor folk!

His rant about those who wittingly cause the problem of poverty with their complicity should be a topic of deep discussion here on DU!

Please, tell me that some of you watched this one!

1. That I did!
I was enthralled by this man. He speaks truth to power, and I intend to go and buy his book. I agree, everyone should be talking about this here on DU, and try to catch the rerun on CSPAN when it is on! He made me think in ways I hadn't before in re to Scripture, and it's interpretations.

2. Thanks! You give me hope!
Can you tell in what ways he made you think differently?

I'm asking because I've gone hoarse trying to talk to people!

I'm going to make copies of this and give to several people, and I'm hoping it has the same effect on them as it had on me!

Thanks for responding!

13. Well..............being a reformed "fundie",
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 06:39 PM by discerning christian
I had been brainwashed for years about a vengeful God of the Old Testament, and a loving, forgiving God of the New. I decided to get off that merry-go-round about 20 years ago. I still believe in Him, and my Salvation, but with a kinder, non condemnation way. I was still doubting how He felt about "Adam and Steve". I felt, "live and let live" the Golden Rule, and loving one another as He loves us. I'm much less dogmatic than I used to be. Don't get me wrong, I've always been a liberal, but today it just hit me that I still may be holding onto some deep prejudices. Not racial, or ethnic, or sexual orientated. The only way I can explain it is ........It's all OK in Gods eyes. I was making Him out to be a smaller God, than He really is. So, if it's OK with Him,"it is well with my soul". Can you get my meaning? It is really hard to explain, but it's like having Scripture VALIDATE the feelings I already had, and the Word of God doesn't have to be "watered down" to be a liberal thinker. Sorry if I'm rambling, but this is how my thought process sometimes works. I may have to edit this a bit when I proof read it!!! :pals: I've always felt that what the fundies said about NOLA and God's wrath was pure hatred!!

22. Thanks for a really fine explanation! I think I know just what you mean.
We're all on a journey, and have to continually "update" our psyches. :) It's always a treat when someone like Michael Eric Dyson sends us a little further down our path, isn't it? :pals:

I really appreciate your integrity; looking at your beliefs, and looking closer to see how it really works for you. I know it's not an easy thing to do.

Are you familiar with Jim Wallis? His book, "God's Politics" really spoke to me, and helped me with some much needed support. I recorded an interview of him on LinkTV a couple of years ago, and saw him on his book tour, and appreciated his strong voice on behalf of poor folk. He's doing a lot of organizing, including among evangelicals, and it is having an effect. There are changes afoot!

Are you familiar with his magazine, Sojourners? Call To Renewal? Both of those are great resources.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. I'm having a hard time putting mine into words. A big part of it is that as a poor person, I don't feel any sense of belonging anywhere, so that holds back my participation in any church. I'm from a liturgical background, but just don't feel like I fit in there.

7. more info
In "Come Hell or High Water" author Michael Eric Dyson criticizes the U.S. Government's response to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The author argues that the Bush administration and FEMA's failure to provide aid in a timely manner is another reminder of the deep class and racial divide in America. He analyzed the problems displaced survivors of Hurricane Katrina are facing today, and debated if the storm was caused by God. This event was hosted by Eso Won, an African American bookstore in Los Angeles, California.

the African American community!

This is such an important book... why aren't all Dems busy reading this one?!

12. Hence the point of my comment, which I readily admit was
hasty given the limited information provided by the OP. I should have looked it up first and stayed on topic. For that I apologize.

However, I find it very difficult to view anything in the media without some measure of suspicion. And that is a shame.

I didn't see the show today, is there any chance that it was previously aired on c-span? It seems as though I watched it a few months ago. Deja Vu?

18. The Katrina segments have bee so moving. And you get a sense
of how many different kinds of people in so many walks of life trying to do SOMETHING, trying to help in some way, to make things better in any way they could. Sort of restores your faith in people.

17. I happened to catch this segment of the programming today, and I wasn't
aware of this wonderful man, nor of his book. I was very impressed with him and with what he had to say. I admit that I wasn't aware of the commonground group that has done so much work in New Orleans until I saw one of the founders along with another gent on c-span during their Katrina coverage last week. My bad that I somehow missed these wonderful individuals, but I'll try to support and help them.

Ignorance confessed.

Ohhhhh, no.... no problem! There are lots of people *I*'m not familiar with, I'm sure, and it's the same for all of us. Just glad that you were able to "meet" him this weekend!

I just wish he was a bit more "high-profile"!

33. Well, at least I'm honest about my ignorance!
We always save change and I was most enthusistic about contributing it to Randi Rhodes call for help to contribute to Habitat for Humanity for the Katrina relief effort. Now I think that 1/4 of a large container of change will go toward the efforts that she has called for and the rest and some extra will go to the common grounds efforts.

I just sprung on my spouse tonight that I think that we should spend the long winter break that the kids get from school in NOLA helping to clear debris, building, painting or whatever we can do to help. I'm sure that it will make our repub family members angry, but I can't think of anything that will make me feel better!

Christmas helping others instead of contributing to gifts to people who really don't need them - I think I'll be much happier 'workin' in New Orleans' as opposed to the song "Walkin' to New Orleans".:hi:

You sound inspired, so I'm doubly glad you caught the program.

I think that's a great idea. I completely agree with you about the presents. There was a time when Christmas presents meant a lot, because people had a lot less. Most have so much now that it's beyond silly.

Your idea is in the true spirit of Christmas, imho!

I don't know how I missed it the first go 'round, but I hope it will see another audience later on. His words deserve a large reception!

Yeah, I know about the website, but it's not possible for me, and I also like to share the tapes of the really good ones. Not all of us can watch the videos on the web.

14. I watched this. He was tremendous. And in the middle of this
segment, he gets into a wrestling match with audience members who are disrespecting gay folk.

I want to watch it again because he said spoke to poverty in a very special way, in a way that most people struggle to do.

I watched the first part over again, where he really nails people who contribute to poverty, and have to admit that, while I certainly understand what he's saying, I have to hear his words again and again.

What a speaker!

Wish he was featured at a Dem Party large gathering... like a convention, maybe???!!!! :bounce:

It was on NBC at 8 pm eastern time, so if you're in a different time zone, you may still be able to see it. The program was very good. Williams didn't hesitate to criticize Bush, FEMA, Homeland Security, nor was he reluctant to discuss racism.
