Webb Surges Ahead of Allen in Latest Wall Street Journal/Zogby Poll
Oh happy day for this Virginian: (doin' the moonwalk)

(Arlington, VA)—According to an independent Wall Street Journal/Zogby poll released over the weekend, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Jim Webb has pulled ahead of Senator George Allen. The poll puts Webb at 47.9% and the incumbent Allen at only 46.6%. The Zogby poll is the third poll released in the last week that shows Webb within the margin of error and the first to show him ahead of Allen.

The Journal called this most recent survey a “sharp swing” in favor of Jim Webb. The poll, conducted from August 15 -21, has a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percent.

“We have always maintained that the more Virginians learned about the real George Allen the more they would know he isn’t right for Virginia,” said Webb spokesperson Kristian Denny Todd. “George Allen has shown his true colors and now more than ever Virginians are saying his values don’t match up with theirs and he should go.”

In contrast, Webb’s message on foreign and domestic issues has caught on across the Commonwealth. In the past two weeks, Webb has delivered a major address laying out a clear vision for our nation’s national security, was honored by the 1st Marine Division Association as “one of the great leaders of the Vietnam generation,” and was endorsed by the Virginia AFL-CIO, the Commonwealth’s largest labor organization.

4. So did the RNC
They'll have to shore Allen up with resources they hoped to use elsewhere. Just 2 months ago, Allen was a given, but not anymore. :D

5. excellent observation...
and still, I don't think Allen (honestly without cheating) will beat Webb now, it'll be super close, but I can see Webb winning by a 2 pt margin.

19. Webb's a Military's Man's Military Man
Webb is a great combination of a guy with solid credentials in the military, and a broad geopolitical perspective. With so many active and retired military people in Virginia, he is the perfect candidate.

2. Why not?
Allen doesn't want to be a senator anymore. If he doesn't want the job, he shouldn't get it.

7. Allen is a screw up!
All this dodo head had to do was keep talking his standard crap and play nice and he was more or less a shoe in. But I guess you can take the man out of the klan, but not the klan out of the man.

10. The More I Read about Webb, the more I like him
I don't live in Virginia, but the more I read about Webb the more I like him. Here's some tidbits from his past:

He was largely responsible for rebuilding the morale and professionalism of the Navy after replacing a derelict Navy Secretary after the Tailhook Convention debacle in the early 1980s.

While at Annapolis, he almost beat Ollie North for the boxing championship.

When Ollie North was running for Senate against Dem. Chuck Robb, North tried to "Swift Boat" Robb. North in effect said that during Vietnam, Robb was a parade ground Marine as opposed to a combat Marine. Webb knew the truth - that Robb had begged for combat duty in Vietnam, but the Marine brass didn't want the President's son-in-law to show up on the casualty lists, so they refused his requests. So Webb went to the Marine Memorial in Arlington along with John Kerry and blasted North.

16. I'm a big Jim Webb fan, too.
I share his Scots-Irish ancestry and read his book "Born Fighting", which is a good book for anyone who wants to understand the working class in the South. While I grew up in Jersey, my family roots are all in Appalachia, so I have some pretty good insight on it firsthand, and though the book was right on traget. Also like Jim Webb, I used to be a Republican and quit after Dubya took office.

20. Anybody who punches Ollie North in the face is a patriot.
And I'm not kidding. North is a traitor.

21. More on Webb vs. Allen vs. North vs. Robb
To add to my remarks above, Chuck Robb did finally convince the military to allow him to serve two combat tours in Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star. Robb then defeated North for the Senate, with the help of some prominent Republicans who really feared North.

George Allen then ran against Robb for the Senate. Allen attacked Robb for opposing the flag burning amendment. Of course, Allen never served in the military even though he graduated high school in 1970 - just the right age to serve in the Vietnamese War that Allen supported. As "The Roanoke Times" put it so well, "One American who's never had to defend his country's flag under fire waving it to attack another who has is revolting."

24. I still can't believe Robb lost to that worthless piece of macaca
Chuck Robb was the only incumbent Democratic Senator to lose in 2000. Losing to George Felix Allen is almost as humiliating as John Ashcroft losing to a dead Mel Carnahan.

23. Webb's Son Is Now Leaving for Iraq
A message from Webb's campaign director, explaining why Webb will miss some scheduled campaign events:

"...Jim's son Jimmy, an infantry Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, has been scheduled to be deployed to Iraq for a number of months. In the last few days, Jimmy learned he would be deploying next week. While Labor Day is the traditional kickoff to the Election and Jim already made many commitments to do events throughout the state ... we hope you understand at this time that Jim wants to have time with his son. He will be taking Jimmy back to Camp Lejeune on Monday and will spend time with him and his unit before their deployment.

Jim wishes to emphasize that he is not unlike the thousands of parents and families who are sending their children and loved ones to war but that it is important to him that he has some private moments with his son before he deploys. Regardless of the political aspects of this war and your feelings towards it, it's important we keep our thoughts and prayers with the soldiers we are sending into harm's way."
