A poll to DU, on behalf of the women here and everywhere.
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 08:14 AM by BleedingHeartPatriot
This article is about doctors (specifically OB/Gyn's!!) who don't agree with contraception, sterilization or in vitro sterilization, based on their religious beliefs. (I wonder if they prescribe Viagra or Cialis)

The poll is here:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14598978/

edited to add poll questions:

What do you think of medical practices that blend health and faith?

I support them and hope they take off.

I think they're fine as long as patients are informed of their options.

I do not support them at all.

The article is here:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14576677/

Here's one of the many mind boggling and false claims in the article:

"We're trying to get doctors to see that contraception is not good medical practice," said Steve Koob, who runs the One More Soul site ( http://www.omsoul.com/ ). "Natural family planning for couples that need to space their children is as effective, and it builds a marriage."

Right, using no contraception is just as effective as using contraception.

20. Natural Family Planning works better
but you have to have periods you can build a calendar around. If you don't, you should choose another method.

Natural Family Planning involves a lot of temperature taking, mucus observation, and knowing your cycle VERY well.

Rhythm is just counting X number of days past the end of your period.

There are instances in which people practicing Rhythm got pregnant more often than no contraception at all.

I learned the differences at my Catholic HS. The instructor said that, according to the Church, the purpose of Natural Family Planning is so that you have sex only when you're fertile and abstain when you're not, thus attempting to become pregnant. She also said that most couple use it for preventing pregnancy.

According to the church I grew up in, in order for sex not to be sinful, you must be married to your partner and that you be open to pregnancy. They call it procreation for a reason. If you don't want babies, don't get married. They also teach that marriage without the intention of bringing children into the world is an act of selfishness. They teach that you must have as many children as you can support, which is liberalized from their old position of have as many children as you can regardless of whether or not you can support them.

I have to applaud my health class teacher. She worked in all the contraception information we needed to know to increase effective contraception while separating out the facts from the offical church stance she was required to teach.

Needless to say, requiring people to have more babies and preventing access to contraception is wrong on many levels, starting with how overpopulated the world is today.

I don't know whether to :eyes: or :scared: that this question is even being asked. These "people of faith" already have way too much influence, IMHO.

too bad the health and faith crowd do not extend their beliefs and energy into the area of ensuring all Americans have decent affordable health care.

9. Right. Isn't is interesting that their version of Christian medicine is
aimed solely at denying women access to contraception, and no mention of caring for "least among us".

11. Why would an OB/GYN ever have to prescribe Viagra?
I doubt, seriously, that many men go to an OB/GYN for check-ups.

That said, I don't agree with these doctors not prescribing birth control (unless the woman is over 35 and smokes, then it's a major health risk). I'd just go to another doctor, but not everyone has that choice.

16. The article said it was primarily OB/Gyn, however, some Family Medicine
docs, as well.

And, you're right, if it's a rural area with only a couple of docs for 100 miles, and those two ascribe to the "contraception is Satan" screed,

18. Damn right not everyone has that choice
Even in a major metropolitan area with hundreds of OB/GYNs, your insurance company might not let you get a second opinion or see the doctor you want to see.

I've been seeing the same endocrinologist since I was 17 and some years it's been a battle to get to continue to see him. Those were the years I paid for insurance and paid for him out of my own pocket because the insurance company refused to accept the referrals I got.

Contraception is the responsible way to go for those who don't want children or who want only a few children spaced out at reasonable intervals.
