UK Drama Paints Fictional Assassination of Bush
Oy!

http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=filmNews&storyID=2006-08-31T114101Z_01_L31353872_RTRIDST_0_FILM-MEDIA-CHANNEL4-DC.XML

British public broadcaster Channel 4 is courting controversy with what it calls a "shockingly real" drama about the fictional assassination of President George W. Bush.

"Death of a President," shot in the form of a documentary examining the assassination, will use a blend of archival footage and computer-generated special effects to portray Bush in October 2007 arriving in Chicago during an anti-war rally.

In the film, Bush is killed by a sniper, and the investigation quickly focuses on a Syrian-born man. It will air in October on Channel 4's More4 digital channel, as well as at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

"It's a pointed political examination of what the war on terror is doing to the American body politic," said More4 boss Peter Dale at a press conference on Thursday.

1. It is interesting that they would place this at an anti war rally!
My guess is that the * cartel will eat their own from within. Why pin this dirty deed on people that want the killing to stop? Peace, Kim

4. It's not illegal to talk
Though it is against the law to threaten the president in real life, a work of fiction is protected by the First Amendment.

9. There was an off-Broadway show here during the 04 GOP convention called
"I'm Gonna Kill the President!" A Federal Offense.

6. I couldn't imagine anyone here picking up the show (unless of course,
they were TRYING to lose their broadcast license).

3. Ugh, they should NOT go there....
Whenever this kind of shit gets aired, we always end up with some sort of 'life imitating art' moment.

I think this is a major error, and it will energize the nutty right--see, all them furriners want our George DEAD!!!

Fucking OCTOBER surprise....you know it will end up on the net here and there. And people will talk about this FICTION instead of REAL KIDS dying in Iraq.

Fuck.

Why stage it at an anti-war rally? Seems like this is just a way to villify anti-war people.

7. exactly - the people who least want a President Cheney
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 11:04 AM by karynnj
There is a real problem with a film like this - this is really really sick. I still remember how I felt when President Kennedy was asassinated and I remember how angry I got when a liberal friend said he didn't care if Reagan survived. I had heard similar things said about Kennedy - and the parallel led to one of the angriest fights I ever had with anyone.

We also need to remember that we are speaking of a person and murder is wrong.

8. I do not agree with this. I understand the First Amendment protects
their right to make such a film, but in today's world, why encourage anyone or give them any ideas? Besides, if anyone did something to hurt Bush it would make them no better than he is.

I want Bush alive and well so he can see first hand the damage he has done to the world. I want him to be legally investigated, impeached, and forced out of The White House prior to the end of his term of President. I want Bush to have due process. We should not encourage people who would do him harm, because that makes us no better than Bush himself.

We are above that, America is above that, and Bush must be held accountable for the first time in his life for his actions. Democracy demands it.

12. The First Amendment doesn't apply to BRITISH COMPANIES....
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 11:40 AM by truebrit71
...making films IN BRITAIN.....I think the film is a bloody stupid idea, and a waste of time, but before getting knickers in a twist let's at least get it right about where it's being made and shown...

15. The thread title makes it clear where the film is being produced and aired
and like many things, it will likely eventually find its way over here as well. No knickers getting twisted, just expressing an opinion, which is allowed here as well as in Britain. ;)

16. you left out that little trip to the Hague...
some travel agent you'd make. ;-)

I'm amazed anyone would make such a film about a political figure still in office, not matter who it is.

Bush will never go within 100 miles of a major anti-war rally

13. Yeah when was the last time he entered a "free speech zone"?
He's usually kept miles away from any anti-war demonstrations.
