CNN is tipping the GOP's hand on their strategy to "win" 2008
They're about to do a story on the Electoral College, and new efforts underway to eliminate it.

Think about it. Electors are not all bound to vote the way constituents do. My guess is that in 2008, the way things are going, there will be quite a few electors who will actually vote their own conscience. Very interesting. So, if BushCo is able to steal the popular vote via Diebold, as in 2004, the EC doesn't have to actually follow that popular vote. The 2000 election is the shining example.

BUT...if they can eliminate the EC, there is a direct line to "elect" the next GOP president via Diebold chicanery.

Think about it. It is a new story, a new theory, but it bears watching. CNN is reporting on it now (4:29)

1. And there are many on the left that think the Electoral College should go
They may very well get the support they need to do it.

2. Double edged sword
without it Gore would definitely have been our President. If the Deibold fix is in we do need it. I doubt highly that the EC would vote against a majority in a state. Has there been any instances of this before?

12. Yes, there have been at least 2 times ....
That I am aware of that an EC member voted against the popular vote. And if I remember correctly the rules for EC vary from state to state. I can't google it right now but those two things are stuck in the old cranium for some reason.

3. If it weren't for the Electoral College
Al Gore would have become President since he recieved more popular votes. Also, faithless electors can throw the vote to a Republican too.

4. interesting theory, but there is no way they can eliminate the EC by 2008
there is no way that 2/3 of the states would support it

5. We must assume that the GOP intends to steal every election from now on.
GOP = fascists.

6. The Electoral College and Diebold both
must go. The EC was the old way of steeling an election and Diebold is the new improved way. We need to go back to a real paper ballot. I really missing those dangling chads.

8. What's bad. though, is
that an the electronic voting, and punch card voting, etc. was put in as a way to stop the stealing of elections where the paper ballot was used.

A thief will always find a way.

7. If they mean.
.... go by the popular vote, I'm all for it. The Electoral College is functionally obsolete, and had we got rid of it in the 90s we'd have President Gore right now and things would be infinitely better.

9. I don't think the pukes want to lose the electoral college
The college gives small states an advantage in voting, the GOP count's on the more lightly populated states to win. If this country ever went to a one person one vote system the GOP's racist southern strategy would be all for nought.

10. I Would be Skpetical of This Interpretation
The Electoral College gives a sizeable advantage to smaller states, which are predominantly Republican. In an evenly divided country, it's enough to swing a close election -- as it did in 2000.

11. The electoral college was instituted to protect slavery. It should go.
The slave states feared the voting power of the northern states and wanted more power given to the less populated (by whites) southern states.

It's, at best, an anachronism. At worst, it gives far too much power to the more conservative small states. As does the senate, which should also be based on population rather than state.
