Buchanan: ‘The Country I Grew Up In’ Was ‘89 or 90 Percent White. I Like That Country’

Pat Buchanan has been a constant presence on cable TV since the release of his book, State of Emergency. Last night on Hannity and Colmes, Buchanan explained that he’s motivated by his desire to keep the country overwhelmingly white.

Buchanan told Alan Colmes: “What I would like is — I’d like the country I grew up in. It was a good country. I lived in Washington, D.C., 400,000 black folks, 400,000 white folks, in a country 89 or 90 percent white. I like that country.”

27. I suppose it depends on where one lives. In my neck of the woods
racism, bigotry in all of its' forms became OK the day the Dimson** stepped into office.

No, I'm not kidding. People who I was friendly with for years all of a sudden started calling me names (the n word lover, gay lover, damned librul bitch) and so forth. My relatives became much more open with their bigoted spewings, also.

It was almost as if it was the new 'trendy' thing to do. I honestly felt as if I can been catapulted back into the 1950's and I wasn't even on the planet yet. Frustrating to say the least because it seemed (seems now) for every decade of progress made it only takes 1 bigoted asshole with a following to set everything back so that the process must begin again. And I can't even begin to imagine what 'people of color' have experienced or how they feel.

5. "The country he grew up in"...
...was run by Democrats and liberal Republicans enacting "Communist" policies that encouraged the growth of the middle class (rather than just fattening the already-wealthy). And it worked.

YOU wanted to change it. Make up yer frikkin mind, Pat.

6. Buchanan
And he can still have that country; it'll be called 'Jesusland,' if only the rest of the country will separate themselves from Buchanan and his ilk.

9. White privilege is a powerful thing
Reminds me of that Chris Rock routine, one-armed bus boy wouldn't trade places with Chris Rock - nah, gonna' stick with the white thing.

I know a lot of white men feel like this, but it's still stunning when one admits it. It's even more stunning that he won't be publicly tarred and feathered which at least would have happened a few years ago.

10. well then.. perhaps that country (Us) should have stayed out
of Asian wars (viet nam/korea) and central american "troubles"..

When you attack other places, you displace a lot of their population, and you (as a country) become responsible for them, and must provide humanitarian aid (immigration is part of that)..

Good ole WWI and II were fought in "western"..(translation white) countries, so naturally the immigrants who came afterwards were mostly white.

Immigration prior to WWI was very "selective"... dark ones for hard labor..light ones for other labor, just short of slavery..

Buchanan's a piece of work..

Natural northward migration from mexico has always happened, but until fairly recently, they "stayed in their places"..ie Calif, Ariz, N Mex, Tex...

400,000 blacks and 400,000 whites is not 90% white.

He is basically saying it was 50% white and 50% black in DC where he grew up in a country that was 90% white don't even know what he means... if I didn't know what he was like I would think he menat he liked the poputlation split 50-50

I think what he was saying was that the city he grew up in was 50% white, and the country as a whole was 90% white.

But I'd rather have Buchanan in the president's chair any day than Darth Cheney and his pet chimp.

Besides, unlike so many of the DLCers in our own party he's anti-free trade, pro-union, and pro-American worker and American consumer. He's our ally when it comes to that.

17. He's just a product of his times.....
after being virtually kicked out of the Republikkkan party he became disillusioned and now just rants and says whatever he likes. He does make a good point though. Name me one non-ethnically/racially homogeneous state that has been able to hold itself together? I'm thinking hard but its difficult. Brazil is the only thing that comes to mind. I'm not advocating white power but this goes hand in hand with my doomsday predictions that this country will split up and Mexican-Americans will deliver the American Southwest back to its former mother-country.

And to be honest, I'd support them. That land was stolen from them. All they're doing is taking back what is rightfully their own.

19. I'm no fan of Colmes, but I gotta give him credit here. . .
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/08/31/buchanan-white-country/

Colmes baited the trap, and Buchanan stepped right into it.

(snip)
COLMES: Would you prefer only white immigrants?

BUCHANAN: No. What I would like is — I’d like the country I grew up in. It was a good country. I lived in Washington, D.C., 400,000 black folks, 400,000 white folks, in a country 89 or 90 percent white. I like that country.

then you can be around all those right-wing white folks you seem to like. Or perhaps Northern Ireland. Otherwise, shut your trap. America is becoming more colorful, so cope, Paddy boy.

White folks' capacity for being shocked (shocked!) is really quite amazing.

It's like Memento - racism is a brand new discovery to them. Every. Single. Time.

Bosnia, gotta be over 90% white. Vikings, Druids, Saxon Invaders 100% white. Man, those all white countries sure are the greatest! And that Hundred Year War---no one could throw a war like the white man! I can see why Old Pat wants to move back to the old country.

Let's pitch in and get him a one way ticket.
