NORM: Judges irk mother of Miss Nevada

Miss Nevada's controversial pro-Yucca Mountain stance was sparked by "ruthless" judges involved in the Miss America Pageant interview process, according to her mother.

"They really nailed her on the interview," said Lena Wosik. "The judges were ruthless."

Wosik replied, "It has to go someplace, and that was the best-built facility in the country," Nevada's state pageant director, Nancy Ames, told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

And if people die?

"We just have to take one for the team," said contestant Wosik, according to Ames.
-snip-
-----------------------------

I'll bet Miss Nevada knows zilch about radiation.

catch what her misguided mother said:

Wosik's mom, an orthodontist assistant, said the interviewing process leaves no room ''for middle ground. You have to have strong beliefs, and they were putting her on the spot."

"It's a tragedy that we have nuclear waste, but it's got to go somewhere. I'm sure she'll get hate mail. I felt they should have been asking about education, not how she feels about strippers."

Miss Nevada is a 'lyrical dancer'. whatever that is

Homeland Security troops are stationed at the Pagent.

everyone seems to have gone mad - must be the toxins

1. I nominate Miss Nevada to be the first one to 'take one for the team'.
What a supreme asshat.

4. Well, let's all hope for her sake she does well in the bathing suit and
formal ball gown competitions, because this creature is not a Mensa candidate.

A case can be made for putting the waste at Yucca Mountain
My reply would have been something like "How many people are dying from where we are storing waste now?"

That said, I have no sympathy. Someone running for Miss America is by definition a public figure, and needs to learn how to answer tough questions delicately. It comes with the job.

It might also help if she spent some time learning the issues so she could say something intelligent.

8. Her platform is cancer recovery!
Does her platform consist of going around to different cancer wards thanking the patients for taking one for the team?

I ccould almost understand if she weren't from that area, if her teenage brother didn't have bone cancer, if she hadn't chosen cancer issues as her platform - her particular area of interest and expertise.

But given all that, this is a stunning display of her complete lack of brain activity.

13. Maybe she thinks that if Nevadans get the radiation treatment
out of the way first, they won't get cancer. She probably has as much sense as any other beauty pageant contestant...

9. Miss America is a "public figure" who should ...
have a well-developed opinion about nuclear waste disposal? Really?

The primary qualification for being Miss America is being pretty, and the primary job role is traveling around to public events acting nice. That's it. Who cares what she thinks about nuclear waste?

14. obviously, the judges cared
it's their contest, and if they want to keep pretending its about poise and scholarship (well, and "physical fitness in swimsuit"), I guess they can

16. She is a role model.
So, the role we want modeled is ignorant and empty headed and inconsiderate of the pain of others?

10. My sentiments exactly
We have to find somewhere to bury this waste- and people are deluding themselves if they don't think we're going to have to rely on much more nuclear power in the coming decades.

But that's not what she said- her response just invited a bimbo comparison.

I always thought that Miss America interview questions were along the lines of "Do you prefer puppies or kittens?"
