Okay, enough is enough. Who is messing with my support list?
Just this morning, I notified the families on a small support list that I run that I'm looking into an alternative to Yahoo! Groups.

This entity just tried to join:

AbuseODAT-Archiv4@un.unhcr.co.uk

I hope I'm just pissed and paranoid and that this means nada. But, we've been very active with progressive 527s, with a bunch of groups that are probably targeted.

Can anyone help me find out what that addy is?

At this point, I'm just MAD. The list they are trying to sub to is for families dealing with major mental illness. Not for families raising suicide bombers or even critics of Monkey Boy's near English.

1. A netsol whois run gave me this info
un.unhcr.co.uk

SSL Certificates - Make this site secure
Site Confirm Seals - Become a trusted Web Site
Error for "un.unhcr.co.uk".

This domain cannot be registered because it contravenes the Nominet UK
naming rules. The reason is:
the domain name contains too many parts.

WHOIS lookup made at 21:04:51 22-Jan-2006

So it's a fake addy which leads me to believe it's just spammers.

3. So, my question is, why would spammers target
a little list that isn't promoted ANYWHERE?

It's not being hidden, it's just that I've been too busy to put it out there. This list is not advertised on any site. I did try to reach out, but once I was involved in Andy's situation, I have done NO PROMO.

4. I have no answer
There may be a technical reason I am unaware of that has exposed your group's address even without promo, or you could be right and justified in being paranoid. I saw what happened with Andy, too. No such thing as too paranoid.

11. I'm sorry if I sound hysterical now. I'm upset but not hysterical.
Our families deal with stuff every day that would blow most people away.

Wish I could track that addy down. Thanks for your help, Book Lover. :)

8. That's not what you should be looking at
That is a valid e-mail address despite what Booklover said. You need to knock the un. off the front of it. That's call a CNAME and identifies a subdomain at unhcr.co.uk. Here's the registrant info for unhcr.co.uk:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=unhcr.co.uk

angelina dowler
leicestershire GB

The unhcr.co.uk domain redirects to this site: http://www.unhcr.info

Here is an example of someone using an un.unhcr.co.uk email address (tinyurl to a google cache off a Yahoo group message): http://tinyurl.com/dvbpr

2. today, in the newsweek article about pentagon spying
(CIFA) - the article about spying on a small group that protested halliburton's fraud on govt (esp meals to troops) by serving pb&j sandwiches to halliburton employees - the article mentioned efforts to 'watch' via the internet... and it stated that sometimes they would use fake foreign addressees ... to see if they could get 'interested' groups to contact the fake. It didn't specify why - but it sure made me think of the NSA fisaless spying based on contact with a 'foriegn person suspected with terrorism' - I wrote on the margins of the article... attempt to entrap folks into a fisaless search net? Do read the "another big brother" article in LBN (and opinion/editorials) maybe it is related to what you just experienced.

5. Thank you, salin
This list is very specificaly for families dealing with major mental illness. It isn't in the least political except that I sponsor it.

We're looking into a new home now.

To the people who would mess with that effort: May you never be visited by mental illness and may you never need help with that.

(I missed this post while I was posting below.)

This guy would be a perfect SETUP for what you suggest.
His site just SCREAMS 'potential terrorist',
when viewed in that light.

6. Don't let the suckers
get you down hon. And don't let this phase, that the I Ching would describe as the "crescendo of awfulness" bring you down either. There are far more of us than them. You are a helping person. That is clear.

"Near english". . .? My you are being generous today. LOL

13. No. Because our families tend to be too traumatized to
operate that way.

Usually, I get a short, reticent email, then I encourage them to sub and slowly, to talk. We're talking about families that are having a very, very, very hard time.

This doesn't fit the profile in any way.

for several years and have had these oddball membership applications. I truly think they are just spammers. It is one reason to have membership apps. need approval.

21. As a certifiable whacko
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 07:09 PM by stellanoir
would be happy to help you with this problem. : )

I can assure you though, that most mental health problems are a sub set of spiritual issues, not the other way 'round.

Yes, having had a counseling practise of well over two decades, I'm well aware of how devestatingly confusing it can be for the extended families. The straightforwardness with which Doctors interact my elder sister who is a health care professional, versus the stand offishness they related to the rest of my family in recent physical circumstances regarding my mom are astounding.

The situation is truly untenable.

Perhaps we can try to fix it.

Yes I am an eternal optimist. : )
