If Dems follow the polls on Alito, we're sunk -- new from CNN/USAT/Gallup
CNN: Poll: Alito should sit on high court
Supreme Court nominee expected to win panel support Tuesday
Monday, January 23, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A majority of Americans said the Senate should confirm federal appellate judge Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court, with just 30 percent opposing his confirmation, according to a poll released Monday.

Only 38 percent of respondents said they think a filibuster by Democratic senators would be justified, and about a third said they believe Alito would vote to overturn the 1973 Supreme Court decision that struck down state laws against abortion.

The CNN/USA Today/Gallup survey of 1,006 U.S. adults was conducted Friday through Sunday and had a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Support for Alito's confirmation grew after widely televised confirmation hearings, the poll found. Before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, held January 11-13, 49 percent of respondents backed his nomination. In the poll released Monday, 54 percent expressed support.

The percentage of people who opposed his confirmation remained unchanged after the hearings, Monday's poll found....

12. I certainly hope so
Or that they at least take a look at more than one poll before they draw any conclusions about how the public feels.

6. I don't think the average American knows squat about Alito...
The commercials may have helped but there were opposition ads too.

Alito looked pretty damn good at his hearings. Even I had to admit it. Despite his non-answers he seemed to have the right demeanor and his wifes bawling humanized him. I swear she had an acting coach!

I know his record should disqualify him but I don't think it will, sadly.

8. I wonder how many of those people really understand the constitutional
issues involved? Some of the Senators surely do. Let's pray they do the right thing. And those numbers aren't THAT strong, after all.

Just because Alito was coached in how to appear moderate, and apparently a lot of Americans were taken in, surely doesn't mean he should be confirmed!

9. More than half probably don't know where he stands on the issues even.

So they just go along with saying yes, because they don't want to look stupid. I mean, when 57% of Americans can't name a single Supreme Court justice, you have to think that these people probably say yes to approving a SCOTUS nominee, so they don't look stupid.

10. The real issues have not been presented well
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 08:26 PM by Armstead
The media ignores the big issues. Little things like the rights of citizens to seek redress against the powerful in court. Hamstrining Congress with knitpicking rulings that limit their power to declaring National Pickle Day. Gutting of workers rightsand protections. The ability of communities to plan their destinies with zoning and environmental regulations.

Little stuff like that. Not as important as his "reasonable" demeanor or his wife's hissy fit.

11. It seems simple to me
Hold a filibuster, get on TV, tell the people why. Watch those poll numbers fall. Even the BushCo operatives at Gallup/USAToady/Gannett won't be able to cover it.

13. The Dems have been getting inundated w/e-mails, and
the NYTimes had a scathing editorial today about Alito. They know the confirmation will be a very bad thing for this country. So all that remains to be seen is how they handle it.:scared:

14. It's not as bad as it sounds! Look at this from the article!
Of those surveyed, 48 percent said a Democratic filibuster of the nominee would not be justified, while 38 percent said it would be. Another 15 percent said they were not sure whether a filibuster -- the use of extended debate to block a Senate vote on the nominee -- would be justified.

So, there are a lot of undecideds, who would be unlikely to put up a fuss if a filibuster happened.

I really wonder about this poll. I've tried to get ahold of the questions they asked, but you need a subscription to Gallup in order to get at them. I can't help but ask if this is just another instance of fake science being used in an attempt to create the desired political effect.

I've written to Media Matters to ask them to take a look. I'll post back anything I hear.

16. We should also keep in mind that CNN recently hired Glenn Beck, a
horrible RW hatemongerer. CNN is going downhill.

will be few venues to turn to, except the internet. At least I have access!
