GRANVILLE, Ohio -- First Lady Laura Bush helped raise campaign funds for the Republican congressional candidate at a luncheon in Central Ohio on Tuesday.

Bush said that Rep. Joy Padgett's experience in the Ohio Legislature would make her a respected voice in Washington.

Republican leaders also were counting on the visit to generate some buzz for Padgett, who won this month's special GOP primary in Rep. Bob Ney's district.

Ney dropped his bid for re-election in August, and more recently agreed to plead guilty in a congressional corruption scandal. Licking County Republican Chairman Richard Salvage says the White House's offer to send in the First Lady shows confidence in Padgett's ability to keep the seat for the GOP.
