Eleven GOPers Fingered in Foley Cover-Up
Eleven GOPers Fingered in Foley Cover-Up
By Justin Rood - September 30, 2006
Roll Call's John Bresnahan reports:

As of Saturday evening, nearly a dozen House GOP lawmakers and staffers have acknowledged that they knew of the initial batch of non-sexually explicit messages from Foley to a 16-year-old former House page, some of them for a year or more. These include Hastert <(IL)>; Majority Leader John Boehner (Ohio); National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Reynolds (N.Y.); Reps. Rodney Alexander (La.) and John Shimkus (Ill.); Mike Stokke, the Speaker’s deputy chief of staff; Ted Van Der Meid, Hastert’s counsel; Paula Nowakowski, Boehner’s chief of staff; Jeff Trandahl, the former Clerk of the House; and another Hastert aide and Alexander’s chief of staff, according to public statements and GOP insiders.

Here's my take on it - I call 'em all "Foley Artists." Just a bunch of noise-manufacturing machines.

7. Have a question:
OK what about the kid at the other end of Foley's instant messages.

While the press can not legally mention his name is the boy himself able to make direct contact with the media? Questionable area.

There is the free speech issue and yet at the same time he is under age.

Seems to me he could easily market his story to the tabloids or even Geraldo etc.

Please consider this.

9. He has probably been strongly advised and cautioned not to talk.
He is a material witness and Foley may well end up either going to trial, or pleading to a lesser offense and perhaps serving probation.

Just my 2 cents, but I'm not an attorney.

11. And your point is?
FYI, more than one kid communicated with Foley via IM. What are you trying to ask? Do you mean these boys somehow have a responsibility to go public? Are they being accused of exploiting their stories? What are you trying to say?

14. Kid in the IM from 2003 is no longer a minor. The kid who turned in
the nonsexual emails he received from Foley in 2005 is still a minor but all he has said is he was creeped out and didn't respond back to Foley. The St Petersburg Times tracked him down and spoke to him in Nov 2005. He didn't want publicity or his name used. And again, the emails he received had no sexual content.

The sexually explicit IM's that ABC received after they ran the "email" story come from a different source and involved a different former page who, given the time elapsed, is no longer a minor.

Foley was a "friendly" guy and apparently had been doing this stuff for years. (Pages were warned in 2001 about Foley.) Odds are there are a number of former pages over the years who received explicit communications from Foley who are no longer minors. Whether they are willing to come forward is another matter.

and just hid it. Republicans are that way. Now they've GOP operatives in control of everything, I am sure it will be found that the minors were the cause of the perversion and ordered to apologize.

31. Remember
that every ONE of these monsters voted FOR TORTURE, Stabbing the Magna Carta in the Back, the Repudiation of the Geneva Conventions, etc.

They don't just HIDE Sexual Predators, if they had their way, this monster might get some in his BASEMENT, charge them with something and TORTURE THEM, this is a crime of POWER as is Rape in the end, Power over the Victim, just like Torture.

And I find it REALLY interesting that Hastert was a HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING COACH.. doesn't that involved underage boys grappling with each other, maybe some Coach showing them HOW? I wonder if any boys from his Wrestling days might want to come forward and talk about him groping or inappropriate speech?

46. An "over-friendly" politician
After initially denying any knowledge of the Foley threat to pages, Hastert admitted the Republican leadership knew for months, if not years, of the problem but claimed they were only warned Foley was "over-friendly" with pages. My question is this: how can a politician be "over-friendly"? How could Hastert have thought Foley's inclination to be "over-friendly" with pages was anything other than pedophilia? What did you think, Dennis? Did he smile too much, greet them in the hallways or otherwise treat them too nicely? If that was the "problem," why did they have to be warned? Why was there even a discussion? I seem to recall a young veteran is running against Hastert and figures to have no chance to win. If he makes Hastert eat those words enough, maybe he can turn the tide.

55. Links: Democratic challengers to Republicans most vulnerable in Predatorgate
coverup, by my assessment of the R's vulnerability to calls for resignation.

The OP mentions some of the Republicans who need to be asked, "What did you know, and when did you know it", and whose hard-drives MUST be seized as evidence in a possble criminal conspiracy.

I went to http://www.fec.gov and http://www.thegreenpapers.com and clicked through to state General Election voter information pages. Here are the incumbent names, states and districts, Democratic challengers, and campaign homepage URLs:

See http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2006/9/30/212758/946/426#c426 for more details.

Here's where you can go to help some of these candidates. Most of these Democrats are on their own with very few resources. One doesn't even have a website!

IMO, what they need most is help with local media, press releases, photo-ops, etc. IMO, their only hope of gaining office for themselves is to ignite local media feeding frenzies to bloody up and then devour the coverup leadership. You can even find lists of links to their local media at the bottom of General Election webpages for their states at http://www.thegreenpapers.com .

57. Rodney Alexander was a Dem until 2004...
Alexander had been elected in 2002 as a Democrat, with the strong support of the state's two Democratic senators, Mary Landrieu and John Breaux, narrowly defeating Republican challenger Lee Fletcher. However, he'd seriously considered switching parties soon after John Kerry won the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, but initially decided against it. Breaux reportedly told Alexander that he would find and raise money for a Democrat to run against him if he switched.

However, two days after filing for reelection as a Democrat, Alexander filed for reelection again as a Republican with only minutes to go before the filing deadline. The Republicans promised him a seat on the Appropriations Committee if he switched. The last-minute switch denied the Democrats time to find a credible replacement candidate, though Alexander had been heavily favored for a second term in any case.

Reaction from Democrats was, not surprisingly, very hostile. Breaux called Alexander "a confused politician who has placed loyalty at the very bottom of his priorities." Landrieu said that Alexander's move was the most "cowardly" she'd ever seen in her career. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer denounced the switch as "an act of perfidy." Republicans, however, were naturally overjoyed.
