Let's pretend that on 9/11/2001, so depressed after watching the horrid events of that morning, you went into a deep coma.

You just now woke up. Turning on the TV, with all the 9/11 anniversary stories, this is what you'd expect to hear as you wiped the sleep from your eyes after five years and slowly regained consciousness....

Security Planning: Clear And Focused. Since 9/11, the Administration and Congress have worked cooperatively, recognizing that the last attack was not necessarily a blueprint for the next one. As a result, a comprehensive, proactive and anticipative aviation security program has been implemented. The goal is to be constantly thinking like a terrorist, trying to determine how people with an intimate knowledge of our strengths and weaknesses would try to hit us again. This, combined with a tight communication system between TSA and intelligence agencies, has established a formidable line of defense - and deterrence - against another devastating attack.

The US Security Focus - Not Giving Up Our Freedoms To Terrorism: Congress and the Administration understand that the ultimate objective of terrorists is not just to kill us, but to destroy our way of life by instilling fear and keeping us guessing. They also agree that if we are to be completely "safe" from terrorist attacks, we would need to give up our freedoms, curtail our way of life, and essentially cower inside caves. That, the Administration and Congress have correctly concluded, is not acceptable....

Now that we're awake, let's review what's really happened in the past five years. (MORE at...)

1. Sounds like what happened with a large group of the population.

2. Waking up now after 5 years of sleep, I would expect to find that
an intense government investigation, supplemented by efforts by citizens and private investigators, had uncovered the reasons for the NORAD standdown on 9/11, and for the Bush regime's inattention to numerous signs of an imminent attack: that persons within the Bush regime, and a few in the military, possibly foreign agents had conspired to the commit the crime. I would expect to see Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and others in jail treason (and Bush removed from office and under court ordered psychiatric care).

Let's see. What else? We would not be in Iraq, of course--we would not have made that enormous "blunder" (war profiteering scheme). Tens of thousands of Iraqis and almost 3,000 US soldiers would still be alive. We're beyond the 2004 election, so I would expect--as a result of the unparalleled scandal of 9/11--to see a populist reformer in the White House (someone like Howard Dean). I would expect to see a Democratic Congress, of course--with a strong leftist (majorityist) tinge. In so far as Al Qaeda or OBL participated in the 9/11 attack, I would expect there to have been an efficient capture of these Bush Cartel abettors of the crime, trials and and imprisonment of those convicted, and I would also expect to see a unified world, working in concert with the U.S., both to shut down terrorist cells AND to address the many problems that result in young Muslims being attracted to such organizations, including a strong and effective effort to get Israel and Palestine to the peace table (justice for Palestinians, safety for Israel). I would also expect to see us 5 years along on a crash plan to get off Mideast oil (including good relations with Venezuela for a temporary increase in supply), with the long term, ten year plan for clean energy (to stop global warming). We would have apologized to the Iranian people for destroying their democracy in 1954, and inflicting them with 25 years of torture and oppression, and we would be helping them to overcome their fear and distrust, and to become the progressive society that they are very capable of being. The UN would still be monitoring Iraq closely for WMDs, having gotten rid of them all, and the Shias would be plotting Saddam's overthrow. There would be a struggle in Congress about the military budget--with war profiteers salivating to benefit from "terrorism"--but saner heads would have prevailed, the military budget would be reduced and the resources used for REAL security measures, and overall, the US would be free of debt, brimming with jobs (outsourcing would have been punished, and global corporate predators curtailed), and looking forward to a positive and prosperous future, having weathered its worst crisis, with the help and good will of our friends throughout the world.

And our elections would be the envy of the world's democracies--cleansed of corporate money, as transparent as glass--instead of the disgrace that they have become--with American politicians (s)elected by Bushite corporations, using "trade secret," proprietary programming--the laughingstock of the world. This is the biggest shock of all for this Rip Van Winkle. So shocking that he goes into a coma again, and sleeps for a thousand years, and doesn't wake up until the South Americans, democracies invigorated and made prosperous in the early part of 21st century by their visionary resistance to Corporate Rule, have colonized Titan and are sending their first transwarp ship out of the solar system.
