America is strong - GREAT LTTE from KC Star today!!

America is strong.

While terrorists may wish us ill and may even succeed in attacks against us, our will to stand firm will prevail. Other governments may envy and plot against us, but our system of governance has stood too long to be brought down by outsiders.

In fact, there is only one government on Earth powerful enough to bring down America: our own.

By eroding our civil liberties, abandoning our humanitarian principles, and chipping away at our constitutional system of checks and balances, the Bush administration and its Republican accomplices are the greater threat to our long-term survival as a free, nonauthoritarian nation.

Many letter writers have made the suggestion that since our enemies do not adhere to the Geneva Conventions, then neither should we. They are missing the point that one purpose of the conventions is to protect the United States from becoming more like our enemies.

Terrorism is best fought with intelligence, law enforcement and precision military actions. The ham-handed military adventure in Iraq has only increased the threat to our nation, as the recent National Intelligence Estimate has shown.

We have to stand by our better natures before we lose the moral justification to stand against the terrorists.

1. Wonderful letter.
Not many cities in the United States know what it's like to have its men rounded up and killed, but Lawrence does.

4. That is a great point
I hadn't thought of that, but you are correct.

I wonder if that is why Lawrence is so liberal. :)

3. That's a wonderful letter.
What's the KC Star's usual editorial stance?

5. They have become increasingly conservative
since new owners took it over last year.

But they still print a few great letters like this one.
