So... WHY was Foley placed on a child-focussed commitee?
Foley was Chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, as you're all aware. I assume such a posting would give him an excuse to come in contact with children fairly regularly? The Republican leadership was, apparently, well aware that Foley was a pedophile so- why put him there?

I haven't heard this point brought up, and if there's some innocuous, beauracratic explanation, please enlighten me. But it sounds to me like Foley asked for access to kids in exchange for a reliable GOP vote, and got what he asked for.

2. Yes, this is the important, natural followon question. What was the
process by which he got that position?

And: Did any of his activities with pages/underage boys go beyond the cyber realm?

5. Rovian tactic.....Take a weakness and make it a strength
and take an enemy's strength and make it a weakness (Kerry's service in Vietnam)

This also allows for plausible deniability. Any Dem attack based on those emails would appear politically motivated, and the emails by themselves were deniable.

To me, the real juice here is to find out fast how many people knew and make them resign en masse.
