Foley still logging into chat account with screen name linked to scandal
RAW STORY
Published: Tuesday October 3, 2006

Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) was still using the America Online screen name now associated with attempts to solicit underage boys, RAW STORY has learned. As recently as 10:50 AM EST today, users of the AOL Instant messaging were surprised to find Foley signed briefly onto the chat service, using the screen name Maf54.

The login was used in now-public emails and instant messages with underage boys. Foley signed on only briefly this morning, but has reportedly continued to use the screen name occasionally as the scandal surrounding it unfolds publicly.

BlogActive has taken a screen capture of Foley's online status this morning, available here.

2. What kind of "rehab" is he in that he's allowed net access?
Most places restrict what you do until you're on your feet.

23. THEY SAID YESTERDAY HE WAS IN CLEARWATER FL..THINK
SCIENTOLOGY!! AND THEN THINK JEB AND TERI SHIEAVO!

THE HEADQUARTERS OF SCIENTOLOGY IS IN CLEARWATER!

i know i live on beach there and i have to drive over the bridge and go through downtown clearwater daily..

the headquarters is all of downtown Clearwater...

they have a phoney fronted rehab...

and the place is filled with kids who are being indocrinated into that damn cult!

they have guards set up so parents can not kidnap their kids back...the guards guard a hotel like complex every night..where the kids and adults hotel at and are housed at. ...

there are numerous old hotels they house the kids at..and the kids walk in groups..or are bussed..

the minute i heard he went to clearwater..i knew he is being hidden by scientology...

those fuckers!

It seems like Scientology's almost taken over there. They've got quite a few hotels, & own over a dozen buildings. As you mentioned, one of the hotels is a "training center" (brainwashing center?) for new Scientologists. Another hotel is described as a "religious retreat" that ministers spiritual counseling. Foley's probably just kicking back on the beach during this supposed rehab - and not getting any treatment for his actual disorder.

29. That's awful
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 11:54 AM by Marie26
Yeah, that occurred to me too. So Foley now goes to "rehab" in a hotel that has lots of brainwashed kids w/o parental supervision. That's not good. And how long will this fake rehab last, anyway? I can't believe that Scientology can operate so openly w/o any investigation by the authorities - though, I guess they have the money to bribe the necessary authorities, including perhaps a Congressman from Florida. But it's beyond outrageous for Foley to now use this "rehab" excuse as a way to hide & do whatever he wants w/o being monitored by the police. He just needs to be arrested already.

32. we do not know who was on his computer..it could have been fbi!
or his attorney's...when anyone turns my computer on it is logged on..

his may be as well..

or someone may have been going through his computer..lawyers??

i would have thought the fbi would impound his computer..

or since he has not been charged yet..his lawyers may have his computer..

but i would think they would know better than to mess with cleaning it..
but they may have been checking all the sites he goes to..if he has them saved on his computer..

who knows..but i would bet it was not foley on his computer today or yesterday!

6. Whoa! IMO, not only a PERV but an obsessed dumb-ass predator
He needs to be in counselling, perhaps inpatient, but NOT for alcoholism. :wtf: is an alchoholism treatment center allowing clients to contact the outside world?!? That's usually forbidden for at least the first week (detox).

8. I asked this in the kpete post
on the same subject:

I don't plsy much with AOL stuff...because it sucks. Just the same, the times I've tried to chat with others on that crappy AIM, I found it to be case-sensitive when it comes to screen names. Isn't Foley's nick: Maf54 as opposed to maf54? AOL users, tell me what's up.

I saw that the claim is that Foley was using AOL services and software. I can't find absolute confirmation that Foley's email address was indeed Maf54@aol.com . Only links I see claiming it was AOL were freeper (like LGF). Was Foley using AIM instead of Yahoo or MSN? Anybody got a link?

him. Logging into his account is one way to retrieve information about his contact or ha, 'buddy' list. It might be him or it might not. It could be him or anyone else deleting his contacts. Who knows.

Regardless, its one Instant Message user that I wouldn't get near unless I wanted to be part of this investigation. All we need now is some idiot messing with this investigation by sending emails to his aol account or anything else for that matter.

15. doesn't that happen automatically when you log onto aol?
I never use it, but I have AIM installed on my computer and I'm constantly getting messages that someone has logged on; its my understanding that its automatic whenever they log onto AOL, even if its not for the purpose of instant messaging?

Can any one clarify?

Can you provide some answers to the questions I asked in post #8?

Are AOL/IM screen names case sensitive? Meaning that if your user name is "IamHere", if you try to log in with "iamhere", you get an error?

24. i don't think so
i don't use my aol account very much, and as noted, I have AIM installed because I have some clients that like to communicate using it, but I don't otherwise use it. I'm not all that careful about the caps locked button and I've never been locked out of AOL when I sign on.

27. yeah but
isn't your screen name already in the box when you sign on? do you have to type your user name in when you sign on?

Well, it has been a while since I used AOL and the screen name/case sensitive thing made a difference in email addresses as i recall. then again aol email addresses are AIM screen names...my head hurts.

21. Most of the IM clients...
...now let you log on as "invisible" to others. If it were the FBI or similiar law enforcement logging on as him to retrieve his buddy list or chat history, SURELY they would know to log on as invisible...right? Or am I giving our "intelligence" too much credit? Bah, who knows. I'll get flamed for this, but I almost feel sorry for the idiot. If he weren't in the closet and desperate to be seen as a GOP Moralist, he might have been able to develop a healthy sexual attitude and appetite, rather than now being a disgraced hypocritical predator.
