"Iraq is an abstraction. This is about people, parents, kids. They get it"
Dana Bash on CNN....after she talked to GOP operatives, she explains why the Foley/GOP coverup is a hugh problem for the Republicans.

THIS is why I don't hesitate for a MOMENT to talk up the story. If this is what sells, so be it.

1. Oh I agree
The thing that makes me mad is that this is keeping us from talking about Woodward's book. And it is much more damaging to the repukes than this Foley story.

That being said, I think this Foley story is holding the public's attention longer than the Woodward book would. So we are getting more mileage from this.

2. Obvious point that I didn't get until your post.
I lived in the Middle East for years and I 'get' the mess we are in there
but I am perhaps too hard on my fellow Americans for whom this
debacle is a mess in some far off never never land. They cannot relate.

You are so right. No problem relating to a predator abusing his
power to take advantage of children. I get it now. That is
why this resonates so much more than the overseas mayhem.

4. We who are deeply interested in world events care...
...but for Mr. and Mrs. America, well, they are busy trying to put food on their family and American Idol is starting soon. They are not bad people, I cannot account for their disinterest... but we are discussing, if this allows us to take at LEAST one chamber of Congress, maybe we can begin to stop the insanity.

7. I read a story that people in Bagdhad shrug off Woodward's book
Because they KNOW how bad it is, and it's only average Americans who are having the full truth hidden from them because of propaganda like how the liberal media refuses to report the good news.

5. It's really a sad statement about the American public.

We were lied into a war for corporate profit... "I don't get it"

Our government is for sale to big money lobbiests... "Too many details for me to follow."

Some perv ass congressman wanted to fuck a 16 year old page... "Ooo... deviant sex! That's something I understand!"

6. If a family member is in uniform

there is automatic conflict between supporting the person and differing with policy/Bush, etc. It's always been that way; people are more likely to deal with it privately.

On the other hand, when a predator is busted for going after your kid, my kid, a kid-- no conflict, no doubt, much more room to make angry noises.

Or to put it in clear terms: no one buys the bullshit excuses for this guy.
