Foely - ANOTHER rw trap/spin I just caught onto (ARRRRRRGHH!)
Ok, been starting some threads on things tonight all the while on the phone with some friends. Another friend stopped down here at the house (back porch, out here having a few....) and this caught my ear when I was bitching about the thugs (keep in mind, I live in Ohio and a lot of thugs here, but they are still my friends).

Bill is not always the brightest guy in politics, but can fix anything I can think of except computers. Here was his take not more than 15 min ago:

"So the democrats out there are saying this guy was a hypocrite. SO what does that mean, that dems expect that sort of thing out of each other?"

WTF do you say to someone like that? But he believes it and basically glosses over the whole thing now.

What sort of twisted logic drives the rw brain? I said he was a hypocrite because he backed bills on child sexual abuse and then engaged on it, but his retort was 'so democrats don't back such bills?'

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! God damn how can they believe this shit they spew, how can they twist logic so damn much??

His overall premise is that dems feel sex with teens is ok, but repugs don't, and that is the real issue.

I don't think we will win over some people. Ever.

1. Democrats back such bills, but don't abuse children
That's why they're not hypocrites.

Your dumbfuck friend doesn't even know the meaning of the word.

3. Exactly.

Man, just when I thought I've heard of the stupidest right-winger EVER, along comes the story of one even stupider.

4. Not to be snarky, but why are you his friend?
Really. I have a lot of friends for a lot of reasons but virtually all of them are at least intelligent and insightful. I just don't have time for this kind of stupid, and my tolerance for Republican stupid is zero anymore.

Why do you do this to yourself? You already know his kind of stupid isn't ever going to change.

5. Outside of politics
I have a lot of friends, and I don't judge them based on who they voted for. LIfe is a bit bigger than that....

10. I have a lot of friends too which means I don't have time for stupid
ones.

And I have to admit, I've pretty much weeded out any friends that support this group of repukes. I know they don't share my values or my priorities if they voted for this bunch of war thugs and criminals.

Besides a whole lot of my free time these past 5 years has been devoted to politics, war and peace, poverty and other issues that matter to me - those people who I can most relate to are usually involved in those issues as well. They just naturally become my friends and any of those who can't relate just aren't comfortable with a progressive.

11. This guy
Helps out many poor folk around here day in and out, he dosen't have a steady job - but he does odd jobs for low prices or free for people in the hood.

One shut in cannot cut her grass or paint her house, so he has been maintaining her yard for dirt cheap and is painting her house for free (although she bought the paint).

Outside of politics he has done a lot for people here, just his good nature. He is just mixed up in the political arena.

14. I hear you.
I have relatives/friends that I have had spitting word fights with in regards to politics and other issues. But in the end they are all decent people in many other ways and good deeds.

6. The correct response is "yup, they all suck. You should just...
stay home on election day."

Convincing him to not vote is probably the best you can do.

9. Just ask one question:
"Why are you so quick to come to the defense of a child molester? He isn't here, you don't know him, and yet here you are, defending him. Why? Who told you to say that?"

If he answers that one, ask him why he hates children and wants to make them suffer.

12. Oh, I don't think he supports the guy himself, but politics can be ugly
IE - he feels his whole party is being attacked because one 'gay guy' could not keep it in his pants (though, as far as I can tell, he did, until we hear otherwise). I have known this guy for years and can grok his view to some extent - that one guy did something, the whole party is blamed, and the other party is calling hypocrisy because the rw is a party of morals and values which makes the left the party of....well, you get the idea.

He is just missing some basic schooling :) give me time....

15. How is this different from Clinton?
One guy did something, and the entire party was blamed for it, and Ken Starr spent millions investigating it. The main difference, of course, is that Monica Lewinsky was 22 and the page(s) in question is 16. It's a matter of principle--if something is wrong when a Dem does it, how can it be OK if a Republican does something similar but actually worse?

I know what you mean--I'm working on my Dad.

16. That's not spin, that's just stupidity.
There is a percentage of people we will NEVER win over. Don't need to worry about trying to win them over. They've drunk the Koolaid, plain and simple.

But there is a LARGE number of voters in the middle -- those we CAN win over.

18. You have to talk to stupids as though they are 5 yr olds
Apparently, this guy doesn't know what a hypocrite is. Start there.

It also helps a lot to realize that the worst of Repukes usually don't understand anything at all about the most basic things in politics. They'd be hard-pressed to be able to tell you the name of the Vice Pres., they probably know that there is a House and a Senate, but that's basically it. They probably also have no idea who's in power, where they're in power and what that means. If you say "Speaker of the House" they'll probably give you a blank stare and not know what you're talking about much less WHO is Speaker of the House. Most people find politics in general confusing and in frustration of trying to understand it they give up and just follow along with whatever the talking points they hear are... talking points were designed for stupids.

Most have no clue what the Constitution says. They know that we have free speach and freedom of the press, but believe it or not, most of the time they don't really know what those terms really mean. The worst stupids also scream about "liberals" shouldn't be allowed to say certain things because they have no idea of the real meaning of free speach... they think it only means that we can say what we want unless it's offensive (and then can't really define what "offensive" means). That's why they have no respect for the Constitution... they have no idea what it says or what any of it means and therefore, why it's so important.

They know that the Supreme Court is the highest court in the country but have no idea how that ties into politics or even the fact that it does. The think the Court is totally separate from the "White House" government for some reason, and therefore, has nothing to do with politics. They don't understand how that works with local courts either.

If the Repuke in question doesn't have a particular wedge issue that makes them a Repuke (like abortion or gay marriage), they CAN be turned, but most of the time you have to start at the very beginning and explain basic government to them.

It's a long process, but if you feed them not more than they can handle at a time (at some point, their eyes just glaze over with information overload) they'll come around. The best part is seeing when they've made the final realization that we're being totally screwed and our goverment is dangerous.

I've been going through this with my mother, and it's like pulling teeth. She's smart, but politically stupid, totally eaten by the Catholic Church all her life and conditioned since diaper days to not think but just go along. It's been a struggle, but she's getting there.
