The amendment that would actually keep another Cheney from happening:
This was inspired by this thread.

I've tossed this idea out a few times and it's gotten positive responses, so I'll chuck it out there again in its own shiney new thread.

I propose the following:

This amendment creates a fourth co-equal branch of government to be headed by a panel of 9 prosecutors, selected by nomination by the Justices of the Supreme Court and confirmed by the Senate in their 9 year term, at which time they shall be comfortably pensioned. Terms shall be staggered in 3 year increments.

The Prosecutors have power to deputize investigators, and may bring matters before any court.

The investigators shall have absolute authority to examine any document produced while conducting the Government's business.

The investigators shall have no authority excepting the affairs of elected, appointed and hired persons.

So, I think the phrasing needs work, and it needs a name. Untouchables? The go fuck youself Mr. Cheney amendment?

1. How about time limits for the Supremes?
Why should they be there for life ? I think we see now how horrible that is for the people of the U.S.

4. Yeah, I thought of that, but only over elected officials.
I bet a lot of shit would stop. K-Street. Iran-Contra.

The authority to blast through any stonewall placed to conceal a crime by an elected, appointed or hired person.

An authority who can tell any Attorney General to stuff his gag order.

Red capes would be a nice touch.

3. Interesting idea. One thing that would need explicit clarification (imo)
is funding. I think somehow you would need to insure that this new branch of government had a protected funding source. Otherwise, Congress has strong disincentives to supply funding.

5. How are The Supremes funded?
Good point. Perhaps they get 1/4 of the defense budget?

Think about it, if we're spending a lot on defense, then something's seriously wrong.

6. I thought the 4th branch of the government was either paid lobbyists
or the media. This is news to me :sarcasm:
