Most of the prisoners arrived at the military prison in southeast Cuba slightly underweight but have since gained an average of 20 pounds (9 kilograms), and most are now "normal to mildly overweight or mildly obese," Navy Cmdr. Robert Durand, spokesman for the detention facilities, said Monday.
One detainee's weight has almost doubled to 410 pounds (186 kilograms), Durand said.
U.S. officials assess whether detainees are overweight by calculating their body-mass index, a measurement of weight in relation to height.
Human rights groups attribute the weight gain to lack of mobility in the detainees' small cells. They also cited accounts of released detainees who said they were at times allowed to exercise fewer than three times a week.

I say we get these terrorist killers on the Jenny Craig program immediately before they start to look like denny hastert.
2. If you ask me, they should do that with violent criminals
they lock up here in the U.S.
I say take away their weight-lifting equipment and feed them well. Too well.
Give them all they can eat, video games, and lots and lots of TV.
Instead they come out looking like Ahnold's tattooed siblings. How in the hell does THAT make sense? They come out more dangerous than they were when they went in.
Maybe if they came out looking like Denny Hastert they'd be less likely to cause trouble.
...But there's another reason to avoid HFCS. Consumers may think that because it contains fructose--which they associate with fruit, which is a natural food--that it is healthier than sugar. A team of investigators at the USDA, led by Dr. Meira Field, has discovered that this just ain't so.
Sucrose [table sugar] is composed of glucose and fructose ["bound up" as C12H22O11...not simply a mix of glucose & fructose, like HFCS]. When sugar is given to rats in high amounts, the rats develop multiple health problems, especially when the rats were deficient in certain nutrients, such as copper. The researchers wanted to know whether it was the fructose or the glucose moiety that was causing the problems. So they repeated their studies with two groups of rats, one given high amounts of glucose and one given high amounts of fructose. The glucose group was unaffected but the fructose group had disastrous results. The male rats did not reach adulthood. They had anemia, high cholesterol and heart hypertrophy--that means that their hearts enlarged until they exploded. They also had delayed testicular development. Dr. Field explains that fructose in combination with copper deficiency in the growing animal interferes with collagen production. (Copper deficiency, by the way, is widespread in America.) In a nutshell, the little bodies of the rats just fell apart. The females were not so affected, but they were unable to produce live young.
"The medical profession thinks fructose is better for diabetics than sugar," says Dr. Field, "but every cell in the body can metabolize glucose. However, all fructose must be metabolized in the liver. The livers of the rats on the high fructose diet looked like the livers of alcoholics, plugged with fat and cirrhotic."
HFCS contains more fructose than sugar and this fructose is more immediately available because it is not bound up in sucrose . Since the effects of fructose are most severe in the growing organism, we need to think carefully about what kind of sweeteners we give to our children. Fruit juices should be strictly avoided-- they are very high in fructose--but so should anything with HFCS.
Interestingly, although HFCS is used in many products aimed at children, it is not used in baby formula, even though it would probably save the manufactueres a few pennies for each can. Do the formula makers know something they aren't telling us? Pretty murky!
Unlike sucrose, HFCS consists of a mixture of glucose and fructose, which doesn't require an enzymatic step to break it down before absorption in the intestine. There are currently suspicions that over-consumption of HFCS may be a main contributor to the epidemic of diabetes in the US. 1
... FRUCTOSE FOR DIABETICS? In the past, fructose was considered beneficial to diabetics because it is absorbed only 40 percent as quickly as glucose and causes only a modest rise in blood sugar.5 However, research on other hormonal factors suggests that fructose actually promotes disease more readily than glucose. Glucose is metabolized in every cell in the body but all fructose must be metabolized in the liver.6 The livers of test animals fed large amounts of fructose develop fatty deposits and cirrhosis, similar to problems that develop in the livers of alcoholics.
Pure fructose contains no enzymes, vitamins or minerals and robs the body of its micronutrient treasures in order to assimilate itself for physiological use.7 While naturally occurring sugars, as well as sucrose, contain fructose bound to other sugars, high fructose corn syrup contains a good deal of "free" or unbound fructose. Research indicates that this free fructose interferes with the heart’s use of key minerals like magnesium, copper and chromium. Among other consequences, HFCS has been implicated in elevated blood cholesterol levels and the creation of blood clots. It has been found to inhibit the action of white blood cells so that they are unable to defend the body against harmful foreign invaders.8
Studies on the Maillard reaction indicate that fructose may contribute to diabetic complications more readily than glucose. The Maillard reaction is a browning reaction that occurs when compounds are exposed to various sugars. Fructose browns food seven times faster than glucose, resulting in a decrease in protein quality and a toxicity of protein in the body.9 This is due to the loss of amino acid residues and decreased protein digestibility. Maillard products can inhibit the uptake and metabolism of free amino acids and other nutrients such as zinc, and some advanced Maillard products have mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties. The Maillard reactions between proteins and fructose, glucose, and other sugars may play a role in aging and in some clinical complications of diabetes.10
Fructose reduces the affinity of insulin for its receptor, which is the hallmark of type-2 diabetes. This is the first step for glucose to enter a cell and be metabolized. As a result, the body needs to pump out more insulin to handle the same amount of glucose.21

First, as always, read those labels! If you find that one of the first ingredients on the label is ‘high fructose corn syrup,’ look to the nutrition facts label and read how much sugar is actually in the food. If there is 2-3 grams or less, there is less concern than those foods with higher quantities. For those products, you may want to consider other alternatives that don’t contain HFCS. If the ingredient label lists ‘sugar’ or ‘cane sugar’ the ingredient is made from sucrose, which is a 50/50 blend of fructose and glucose, which has not been found to cause the same problems.
You may be surprised to see just which foods contain HFCS: sodas you would expect, but others like juices, candies, baked goods, cookies, syrups, yogurts, soups, ketchup, breakfast cereals, soups and pasta sauces may surprise you.
[Example: Albertson's "Light" Raspberry Yogurt has 19g Sugar, with HFCS listed as 2nd ingredient on nutrition facts label. Albertson's "Plain" Yogurt has no HFCS ingredient. (Other brands of "Plain" yogurt are possibly same.)]
The consumption of fructose (corn syrup) has risen considerably in the general population within recent years. In 1980 the average person ate 39 pounds of fructose and 84 pounds of sucrose. In 1994 the average person ate 66 pounds of sucrose and 83 pounds of fructose. This 149 pounds is approximately 19% of the average person´s diet.
This increase is due to several factors. There was a decreased use of cane and beet sugar (sucrose) in processed foods and a wide spread use of corn syrup due to economics. Corn is much cheaper and twice as sweet as table sugar. It is absorbed only 40% as quickly as glucose and causes only a modest rise in blood sugar.
A few years ago the medical community revealed that there was good news for diabetics. Many people had previously known that table sugar (sucrose) was not a healthy food for diabetics because it raised their blood sugar levels above normal.
Since diabetics have a hard time maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, doctors counseled diabetics not to eat sugar. The new revelation was that diabetics could eat fructose because fructose did not raise their blood sugar level extremely high. So far so good, but there is more. ...

"I went out on the Internet yesterday, to see if there was a list of foods with High Fructose Corn Syrup as part of their ingredients list. Imagine my surprise when I found that no comprehensive list existed. Rather than lament the fact that no list existed, I've decided we can create one ourselves. I will maintain this list on this site, and have it easily accessible at all times (I'll probably link to it in the "Navigation" box). This list is not meant to be an indictment of HFCS, at least not yet. We'll wait until more tests have been announced to make our determination on the guilt or lack thereof of HFCS on obesity and other health issues. But I feel that such a list is indeed warranted, for information purposes. Feel free to comment and leave any products not yet listed. This will be an ongoing project." After many years of diarrhea and constipation and visiting Gastro Docs at major hospitals and clinics thruout [sic] the country, I found on my own that my so-called IBS [Irritable Bowel Syndrome] symptoms were lessened and almost eliminated by ensuring that no substance that I ingested contained High Fructose Corn Syrup. Also, I cannot eat any fruits without suffering severe consequences...My discovery of this was about sometime around 1985. The Cola/Soda market began sometime in the early 80's of using HFCS instead of Sucrose, and this is what really set me off with this severe problem...Only after adamant insistence did my Gastro doc at Kaiser finally perform a hydrogen breath test. He in fact was not certain that such a test existed or what it would prove. Glucose-I was negative, HFCS-I jumped to a 40. Normal is zero or somewhat more. He was shocked at this discovery. I also had been to John Hopkins, UC Med Center of SF, Stanford, Cedar Sinai and many other local clinics over my 6 year journey to find the cause of my distress.
I have found taking an aciddophulus pill daily, antibiotics (Augmentan) once a year help me quite a bit, if I accidentally ingest fructose or HFCS...My opinion is that Doctors are basically very stupid at times (witness the 20 years it took them to pick up on bacteria as the cause of most ulcers). They are slowly coming around (some of them) to the fact that Fructose, HFCS and Sorbitol are at the root of many IBS patients' problems. These guys are as stupid and close-minded as those who drowned witches in Salem some 400 years ago. I also place Dr. Dean Edell (syndicated radio talk show host) at the top of this list. I reported my findings to him in 1985 and several times over the past 20 years. He was always very dismissive, but now has started to come around. I once told him there was a Nobel prize in medicine for someone who would pick up on this and do the proper studies (this was in 1985)..."

It is not uncommon for severely depressed people with limited mobility to gain a lot of weight. This proves nothing, especially when they have taken them off of their native diets.
