Poll question: WILL ATTACKING IRAN BE GOOD OR BAD FOR THE REPUBLICANS?
If Bush attacks Iran, will the out come for the GOP be overall good or bad for the elections?

1. I think it will be good for the GOP
Because they know fear gets their base out. They still have some who blindly follow Bush so they would think that Bush had no choice but to do this.

I'm concerned that a strike on Iran will be the Reps. October surprise.

2. Good ..

3. Exactly.
Americans like things that go boom with pretty colors.

They won't like the $7 gas, the worldwide recession brought on by insane energy prices, tripling of their winter heating bills, doubling of electic bills in many markets, destabilization of the region even further, doubling or more of food prices, inflation throughout the economy into double digits, endangerment of Israel and the de facto commitment of our entire military and GDP to the region for fifty years.

4. Other
Good for the pukies and the lemmings who cower in fear. The War Pres. will be strutting again.
Bad for the rest of us and the world at large.

I sure hope they don't try it, but am pretty sure it is coming- see PNAC.
I just watched, "Why We Fight" last night and it is needed by KBR and Halliburton.

Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 06:57 AM by C_U_L8R
this would be the worst wag-the-dog move they could do.
They would be thoroughly finished... for good.

Republicans.. can't trust em, can't torture em. (oh wait !) :-)

7. can be very bad, even in the short term
Republicans should take lessons of the Lebanese "experience". If they launch an attack, it will probably be through aerial bombardment. The experience shows that it causes tremendous damage on the civilian infrastructure but relatively little damage on the military if they are prepared, which should be the case.

This will cause extreme outrage in the Muslim world and Iran will probably retaliate by attacking the US fleet which can cost the US severe losses. Besides the US weak spot is in Iraq and if the shiite population rises against the US forces, the administration has no other option than cut and run. It would be a tremendous defeat on all levels : human, material and prestige.

Things could be calmed down in a couple of months, but the price paid in US losses would be enormous. Iran will survive.

8. It's only good for them if you assume elections don't matter anymore
In that case, they want to invade Iran, they invade Iran - it's all good.

But if you assume they have to run in the 2008 elections, well, it would be bad for them.

10. watch for the precipitating event
Expect an attack on Israel or the United States that can be blamed on Iran (possible nuclear or biological). History repeats itself; something terrible will have to happen before Bush makes his move.

Bush is not concerned about the political problems that will result from a war, as he feels he is on a "mission from God".

11. Welcome to DU
Your post makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about that possibility.

I'm inclined to think they will secretely provoke Iran, just like they did to Saddam to get him to fire on U.S. aircraft.

17. My daughter
has told me not to watch as much news as it is affecting my personality. She is probably right. Hate to quit watching the news, might miss the beginning of the end.

Thanks for the welcome.

12. Bad!
How can they maintain a war with both Iraq and Iran. They are so thingly streched over the war in Iraq, look at their recruitment problems, they've had to lower their standards. Economically, how can they afford this. Also, Iran is a more formidable opponent than Iraq was. And unless some horrible attack happens on US soil can be pinned on Iran, their will be almost no public support for a war with Iran.
It does look like their will be a conflict with Iran, but in my opinion, it will be very bad for the Republicans.

15. Bad, but by that time they won't give a flying fuck
Because the chimpenfuhrer* will declare himself dictator for life, we'll lose hundreds of thousands of people. Our army in the mideast will be gone, swallowed up, lost, but we'll never hear about it.
One thing iran probably had hundreds of sleeper cells here ready to go boom just in case of such an event.
