Have her point it out and explain it. Maybe you could do a little debunking.

The latest John Dean book might let in a little sunlight:

21. That's what drives me insane!
She has no idea. I could ask and get back "...um..." She's only repeating things other people say.

A friend suggested "Well, educate her then!"

I replied that she may well be beyond hope, and that I'd have to start with the ABC's in that case.

It's not just politics, current events... but ignorance in general. I think she might be a lost cause, but I want to try.

are good. I have a friend who gave his rightwing grandad one of Al Franken's books for Christmas. For my friend's next birthday, he received the Al Franken book back, all wrapped like a birthday gift from his grandad LOL. Moore or Franken or Ivins etc.--too much of a stretch.

24. you might consider
1. "The Family"--The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty," by Kitty Kelley --especially if your mom gets into family backgrounds. It's very readable, but has a lot of political info in between the juicy stuff. None of what she says has ever been proven false.

2. A book on the same theme but less gossipy is "American Dynasty--Aristocracy, Fortune, and the Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush" --by Kevin Phillips.
--Written by a REPUBLICAN strategist, this details the financial and social empire built by the Bushes at our expense--special interests, arms dealing, cronyism, subversion of democratic principles, Halliburton, election manipulation in Florida, harnessing of the Religious Right. Very readable.

I think if you can get people to start to see the spectacular level of Repug corruption over the decade--they start to disassociate from the party (unless they themselves gravitate toward dishonesty & corruption, in which case they tend to be silently supportive).

I wrote in the front of it "Please read this before you vote again".

I also gave him a gift book of letters Einstein wrote to children. He really liked both, and laughed at what I wrote in the other book.

Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 08:52 AM by Lurking_Argyle
a very good book from a former RW literary hit-man who turned after he came out of the closet; i.e., he was booted by the RW establishment. He helped wreck Anita Hill's credibility in the press ("a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty...") during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings.

43. "Perfectly Legal" by David Johnson
Written by a conservative economic writer. Illustrates in plain language how their Reaganite, pro-rich, pro-corporate, anti-middle class government enables the ridiculously wealthy and screws the poor twenty-fold. Oh yeah, the Repubs control all three branches, don't they?

45. How about going back to basics?
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America

Book Description
In one compact volume, the full texts of both the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE and the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with all ratified twenty-seven amendments to the Constitution are side by side--along with another of America's seminal documents, Thomas Jefferson's VIRGINIA STATUTE ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, an additional world-changing document that codified for the first time that one cannot be required by law to support or prefer any belief or be punished for those one does profess--and the basis for what we have come to know as the "wall of separation" between church and state. Who we are and what we are free to be as citizens of the United States of America is contained between these covers. Enhanced by an index and suggestions for further reading, this volume, small in size but overwhelming in the impact of its contents, belongs in the home of every citizen of the United States.
