>>> When Republican Dennis Hastert was named Speaker of the House, he had the support of every Republican in Congress, including Rob Simmons, Nancy Johnson and Chris Shays.
It has now come to light that Republican congressional leadership, led by Speaker Hastert, has covered up the fact that they had a known sexual predator, Mark Foley, in their ranks for years. Rather than protect the children in the page program, the Republican leadership sought to protect Foley, who was a big fundraiser. Shockingly, at a key moment in the cover up timeline, Foley gave $100,000 to a fellow Congressman, who then remained silent on the issue. Was that extortion or a bribe?
Either way, can we really trust the judgment of politicians who voted Hastert into the Speaker’s role and Foley into a leadership position? It seems that these top Republicans are putting politics and power over child safety. A vote for Simmons, Shays or Johnson is a vote for more of the same.
