Wal-Mart revises sales lower

"Wal-Mart said this morning that sales at stores open at least a year rose 1.3% last month, lower than the 1.8% rise in same-store sales reported Monday.

Wall Street already expressed its displeasure at the 1.8% gain earlier this week; the number was toward the low end of the retailer's projected range of a 1% to 3% gain. And today's news likely takes many by surprise: Wal-Mart collates comprehensive sales data from its stores each week and usually provides spot-on sales guidance.

The megaretailer told Reuters that it had no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.

The stock fell 2% in before-hours trading."
